DPS at SIUC investigating alleged attack on campus Friday

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety say Monday, April 2 they are investigating an aggravated battery that happened on Friday, March 30.

According to DPS, the incident was in the parking lot on the northeast corner of Douglas Drive and Oakland Avenue, just across from the north edge of Campus Lake.

They say it happened at 4:02 a.m. and involved two 19-year-old Carbondale students. The victim told police they had parked their car when three males on BMX-style bicycles approached. They says after a brief conversation one of the suspects, a Hispanic male, sprayed a chemical believed to be pepper spray in one victim's face. DPS says the victim was then hit by all three suspects in a resulting fight. The second victim was also sprayed in the face, but ran away and called police.

DPS says the two victims declined medical treatment at the scene.

Hundreds march for Treyvon Martin in Murphysboro

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The 'Hooded For Justice March' drew hundreds of people to take to the streets of Murphysboro on Sunday evening.

The people who gathered to march for Treyvon Martin, in hoodies, carrying bags of Skittles and cans of Ice Tea chanted that they wanted justice and they wanted it now.

"My whole reason for doing this and coming up with this 'Hooded for Justice March' is to show my concern for the community," said Derecia Johnson of Murphysboro. "And to hopefully be the first person to take this step and that other people will back me up."

Johnson did get the support of more than 250 people who took part in the march through downtown Murphysboro.

"In our community there's a lot of black-on-black crimes happening," said Raynique Lee of Murphysboro. " And I feel that it should quit. And the racism around here just needs to quit, all this drama we're in 2012. And all this violence needs to quit."

IDPH to recognize National Public Health Week

IDPH to recognize National Public Health Week

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department Public Health announced they will be joining communities nationwide recognizing National Public Health Week April 2-8 to raise awareness about the prevention and wellness through this year's theme: "A Healthier America Begins Today: Join the Movement."

The first full week of April has been observed as National Public Health Week since 1995 for communities nationwide to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the public’s health.

“Everyone has a role to play in creating healthier communities and this year’s theme encourages all of us to start now in taking active, strategic steps to get healthy and stay healthy,” said IDPH Acting Director Dr. Arthur Kohrman.

Murphysboro woman killed crossing the street

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS)- Police are investigating a fatal truck versus pedestrian accident that happened on Friday night.

Police say that 57-year-old Viola Ganer was killed while crossing the street at the intersection of Bridge Street and Bridgewood Lane, shortly after 7:30 p.m. Friday.

And some people living near the intersection saw Ganer get run over by the pickup truck.

"I was standing at my kitchen window and I just heard a boom," said Natalie Alexander. "And I see the poor lady in the air.  And she hit the ground.  And I just ran outside and I tried to wake her up, but she wasn't waking up.  So I did my best."

The Jackson County Coroner Dr. Thomas Kupferer pronounced Ganer dead at the scene at 7:40 p.m. from injuries resulting from the collision.

And according to Alexander, the driver of the truck never stopped to see what had happened.

Update on Giant City State Park damaged by tornado

UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS)- In an update on Giant City State Park damaged by the tornado on February 29, two trails remain closed.

According to Superintendent of Giant City state Park Bob Martin, the Post Oak Trail is closed due to the damaged small over-look with a observation deck, which is wheelchair accessible.  The trail also has many cedar trees down.

Martin says he hopes to have it repaired.

On the second trail which is the 12 mile Red Cedar Hiking Trail, he says 50-70 trees are uprooted.

According to the National Weather Service the tornado that hit that area took the trail path.

Regional historian to sign copies of new book

Regional historian to sign copies of new book

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A regional historian will be signing copies of his book on Saturday, April 7 at the Bookworm bookstore in Carbondale.

Herbert K. Russell will be signing copies of "The State of Southern Illinois: An Illustrated History," starting at 1 p.m.

ussell is formerly the Executive Director for College Relations at John A. Logan College. He is a literary scholar and Southern Illinois historian who has been a college teacher, an editor and a writer. He is the author of "Edgar Lee Masters: A Biography" and editor of "A Southern Illinois Album, Southern Illinois Coal: A Portfolio," and "The Enduring River: Edgar Lee Masters' Uncollected Spoon River Poems."

53 naturalized as US citizens in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - U.S. District Judge Phil Gilbert presided over a naturalization ceremony at the SIU Law School in Carbondale on Friday.

Fifty-three natives of Mexico, Laos, India, Columbia, Canada, and even Trinidad-Tobago all took the oath of citizenship in front of family and friends.
