Woodland workshop offered by SIUC

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Forestry Marketing Class and the University of Illinois Extension Service is offering a one-time program to discuss ways to improve management of your woodland area.

The free program will be at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center, located at 150 East Pleasant Hill Road in Carbondale, Ill.

The workshop will include tips on invasive species management, such as identification; benefits to getting rid of pest species; incentives to developing a management plan and what the government can do for you about funding.

Invasive species specialist Chris Evans will discuss how to identify and control invasive species.

He says invasive species can impact your land in many different ways, including timber production and wildlife habitat. According to Evans, being able to recognize and control invasive species is critical to successfully managing your land.

Man accused of attempted murder after Murphysboro stabbing

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS)-

Murphysboro Police arrested a man accused of attempted murder after a stabbing Tuesday afternoon.

Travis A. Miller is accused of stabbing Christian Sanchuk, 18, of Murphysboro with a knife.

Police responded to St. Joseph Hospital in Murphysboro at 3:42 p.m. Tuesday after a report of a stabbing.

Police say the stabbing happened in the 500 block of North 11th Street in Murphysboro.

Miller was arrested a couple hours later on the northwest side of Murphysboro.

Sanchuk was transferred to a St. Louis hospital in critical condition.

Armed robbery investigation in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS)-

Police in Carbondale are looking for two suspects they say robbed a man at gunpoint.

According to police, it happened around 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 17th.

The victim told police two men walked up to him outside of his home in the 800 block of East Grand Avenue and demanded some of his property.

According to police, the suspects forced the man into his home where one of the suspects held the victim and other people in the home while his partner checked out the house. Investigators say the two men stole several items from the house before running away.

Police describe the suspects as black men with long braided hair. During the crime, they were both wearing black or dark hooded sweatshirts and dark pants.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Are you looking for new ways to dress up your favorite Christmas confections?

The Neighborhood Co-Op in Carbondale will offer a cooking class on Saturday, December 10th. The class aims to teach participants ways to stretch their dollars and liven up old holiday favorites.

Some of the recipes on hand include sweet and savory biscotti and chocolate fruit cake. The class funrs from 5:00-8:00 p.m. It will be hosted by Michelle Torre. She's best known for her help with Chef Ash Corea.

The class costs $20 for Co-op owners and $25 for non-owners.

Gov. Quinn proclaims Nov. 26 as "Small Business Saturday"

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Governor Pat Quinn recently proclaimed Saturday, Nov. 26 as "Small Business Saturday" in Illinois to encourage shoppers to support small businesses in the state.

Shoppers are encouraged to use the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, between "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" to shop at small businesses around the state.

“Thanksgiving weekend traditionally serves as the kick-off for the holiday shopping season, and we want all Illinois businesses to have a strong showing,” said Governor Quinn. “I encourage people throughout Illinois to use this time to show their support for local merchants that contribute to our local economies, putting people to work and keeping our economy moving forward."
