SIUC power outage party gets out of control

Wednesday night students on the Southern Illinois University campus used a power outage as an excuse to have an outside party, according to university spokesperson Rod Sievers.

Sievers says power went out to some of campus around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Ameren Illinois, a transformer failure at the SIU-Carbondale Substation caused a power outages to about 2,880 customers in the Hill Road Substation.

Service was restored to all customers except SIU-Carbondale at about 11:46 p.m.  Ameren Illinois counts SIU-Carbondale as three customers. Ameren Illinois restored service to the campus at about 1:58 a.m. Thursday.

Sievers says around 1000 students gathered outside around the Towers area of campus and things got out of hand.

By the time police were able to get the crowd under control, three people had been injured and two of them had to be taken to a local hospital.
