5K scheduled in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The 4th Annual Carbondale Main Street Nightlife Rock-N-Run 5k Run/Walk will take place on Friday, September 16th.

It's scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. at Evergreen Park in Carbondale.

Participants will get a glow-in-the-dark tee shirt and food from the Town Square Market.

There will be trophies awarded to the overall male and female winners. There will also be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophy in each male/female age group.

Kids are also invited to participate. The kids who run the Kid's K will receive a price.

SIUC celebrates Latino Heritage Month

SIUC celebrates Latino Heritage Month

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Voces sin Fonteras, "Voices without borders," is the theme of the 2011 Latino Heritage Month celebration at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

SIUC says Latino Heritage Month celebrates and acknowledges the cultures, experiences and history of the diverse groups that fall under the Latino banner, and there are several educational, enlightening and entertaining events scheduled for September 10 through October 23.

“Latino Heritage Month is an excellent way to expand contact with and understanding of one of the many diverse cultures that make up the community of cultures we have at SIU Carbondale.  It is a marvelous way to learn, to grow and to develop as a member of global society,” said Carl Ervin, coordinator of Multicultural Programs and Services.

SIUC has the following schedule of events for the 2011 Latino Heritage Month:

Crews battle fire at Murphysboro business

A fire at a Murphysboro business has been put out.

It started at Penn Aluminum International at 1119 North 2nd Street around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Murphysboro Fire Chief Steve Swafford says the fire started in the rafter of the warehouse above the presses.  He says dusty grease build up near an electrical box sparked the fire.

The building was evacuated, but workers are back in.

No one was injured.

Carbondale Chamber of Commerce Sept. member luncheon

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The September monthly members luncheon for the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce will be Tuesday, September 13 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

The meeting will be at the Small Business Development Center at SIU. The chamber says this month, the speaker will be Chris Egelston.

A special rate this month will be $5 for members who RSVP and $10 for  non-members or those who did not RSVP.

Carbondale Aglow Community Lighthouse meeting

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The next Carbondale Aglow Community Lighthouse meeting will be Tuesday, September 13.

The meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Carbondale Civic Center. The speaker this month will be Nancy Dennison of Carbondale. She is Mrs. Hospitality and greeter for the monthly meetings.

Organizers say Dennison will be sharing her testimony of how Jesus delivered her and set her free from mental anguish. Because of this, she says her desire is to encourage others who may be experiencing similar problems.

Residents can meet Ill. Treasurer, community leaders, elected officials

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The office of the Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is inviting the community to an after hours event to meet Rutherford, community leaders and elected officials.

The event will be Tuesday September 13 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the SIU Student Center, Ballroom A.

Attendees will have the opportunity to find out if the state is holding any unclaimed property entitled to them.
