Sports medicine specialist to speak at Civic Center

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Dr. David Phillips, M.D. will be the featured speaker at the Carbondale Civic Center on September 14 at 7 p.m.

Phillips is the Chief Medical advisor for the Athletic Training Services LLC in Atlanta, Ga. His presentation will focus on athletes and how oxidative stress affects their performance.

He has practiced as a board-certified emergency physician for nine years before shifting his focus to sports medicine. He was also an All-American swimmer at Harvard, two-time USA Triathlon All-American and qualified as a member of the Team USA for the 2008 ITU World Ironman Triathlon Championships.

“I can’t stress enough the critical role that the thousands of phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables play in helping protect our bodies – not only as a part of a normal metabolism, but especially during exercise," said Phillips.

The presentation is open to everyone.

Southern Illinois Volunteerism Conference open for registration

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS ) - Do you like to volunteer? Well, you might want to sign up for The Southern Illinois Volunteerism Conference!

The annual conference will be held on September 29, 2011 at the Holiday Inn Mount Vernon conference center. It runs from 8:00 a.m. Until 3:45 p.m.

The conference is aimed at people who recruit, manage, or train volunteers as well as people who enjoy volunteering.

Those who choose to attend can take part in various workshops as well as network with other people from around the region.

The keynote speakers this year are Jen White and Katie Campbell, both considered leaders in the field of volunteer management.

SIU Names Mcintosh starting quarterback

Southern Illinois University football coach Dale Lennon has named junior Paul Mcintosh the teams starting quarterback for the season opener September 3rd at SEMO.

Mcintosh has seven career starts at SIU.

The Evansville Indiana native fended off challenges from Sophomores Kory Faulkner from Ste. Genevieve and A.J. Hill from Du Quoin.

Faulkner and Hill are listed "2A and 2B" on the depth chart.

Parking restrictions during Apple Festival

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS ) - The Murphysboro Apple Festival is around the corner and organizers want people to be aware of the parking issues associated with the annual event.

Some spaces that are typically available for folks to park will be unavailable because of carnival rides, arts and crafts booths, and concession stands. Parking lots affected include those behind the City of Murphysboro Annex building, the block that Liberty Theater sits on, as well as behind the Curves building. Those lots will not be available from Sunday, September 11th through Sunday, September 18th.

You will also not be able to park on Chestnut Street between 11th and 13th Streets, on South 12th and South 13th Streets between Walnut and South Streets. Parking is also prohibited on Walnut Street on Saturday, September 17th from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Carbondale Convention and Tourism Bureau recognized

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka recently recognized the Carbondale Convention and Tourism Bureau for their Southern Illinois Culinary Destination Project.

Topinka congratulated Debbie Moore and Nicole Davis from the Carbondale Convention and Tourism Bureau. She applauded the event's contribution to Illinois agri-tourism.

As part of the Office of the Comptroller's "Agri-Tourism Day" at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, Topinka presented Agriculture leaders from throughout the state with proclamations celebrating their achievements and continuing dedication.

“It is incredible to have the Carbondale Convention and Tourism Bureau continue to support agriculture through this event year after year – what a great tradition,” said Topinka.
