MURPHSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Jackson County Board of Health meeting for September has been rescheduled for September 14 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will be at the health department back building located at 415 Health Department Road in Murphysboro, Ill.

According to the board, the meeting agenda for September 14 includes:

Nationwide apple crop forecast improved by Ill. apples

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the national apple crop forecast jumped two percent over 2010 production levels, despite eastern and western states losing production because a cold, wet, spring.

The USDA report shows production in the central part of the nation, including Illinois, saw a sharp increase in overall numbers. It was up 49 percent from 2010 levels at 1.27 billion pounds of apples.

Lisa Mileur, owner of Mileur Orchard located just west of Murphysboro on Highway 149 said Southern Illinois has the perfect microenvironment for producing the best apples in the country.

Two-car crash injures two in Jackson County

Two people were injured following a 2-car crash Friday afternoon in Jackson County, Illinois.

It happened just after 4:30 p.m. on US Highway 51 northbound, south of Coal Road in Elkville.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a 2-car crash with injuries and cars blocking the road on US 51.

Witnesses told police a car driven by Bethany Lane of DuQuoin was going southbound swerving from lane to lane while oncoming traffic took the shoulder of the road.

Lane left the road and came back sliding sideways onto US 51, police said. A car driven by Juanita Tiberend was unable to avoid Lane's car and crashed into it.

Tiberend and Lane were taken to a local hospital with injuries.

Lane was later transported to a St. Louis hospital for further treatment. She was cited by police for improper lane use.

Accident re-constructionist are working the crash and investigating.

Carbondale man charged with stealing from business

Carbondale man charged with stealing from business

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Police were called to the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue Friday  to a report of a burglary in progress.

Officers say the suspect went into a business, stole property and fled the area on foot. Officers then found and arrested William S. Welling.

According to Carbondale Police, Welling was charged with burglary, possession of a controlled substance and bringing contraband into a penal Institution.

 Welling was taken to the Jackson County Jail. The investigation into the incident is continuing.

Vintage baseball exhibition match at historical village

Vintage baseball exhibition match at historical village

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Jefferson County Historical Village will present a vintage baseball exhibition on Sunday, August 21.

The exhibition will open at 2 p.m. and feature the Murphysboro Clarkes vs. Players from Mt. Vernon.

Vintage baseball is played by the rules and customs of the late 1800s. Players wear old-style uniforms and recreate the game based on rules and research of the period.

The game is free and the historical village recommends you bring lawn chairs. Concessions will be sold.

SIU Chancellor: Enrollment up in freshman class

A buzz is in the air in Carbondale, as freshman at Southern Illinois University begin their college careers. Since Southern Illinois University Chancellor Rita Cheng took office once of her focuses has been to increase enrollment.

Cheng says so far, it appears the freshman class is up by nearly 140 students. She says that's an increase the university has not seen in some time. It's a boost not only to the campus but the entire region.

SIU Freshman Nickirah Willis-Lee is from Chicago and getting ready to move into her new home for the school year. "I am very excited to meet new people," Willis Lee said.   

Before Willis-Lee meets those new friends, her first college task is to get all her things into her dorm room. Willis-Lee has her mom Carol Lee along to help.

"It's exciting," Lee said.  "That's my baby, my last."

New Apple Festival event for children under 5

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Murphysboro Apple Festival has announced they will have a new event this year called The Apple Blossom Contest.

The contest will be sponsored by One Hot Cookie and is similar to the Apple Festival Prince and Princess Contest with penny voting and plenty of venues for your child to display their charm and personality.

The Apple Blossom Contest age limit will be under five years old.
