Jackson County farmers still battling flood waters

The recent rains did more damage than good for many farmers in Jackson County.

Fields have been flooded since the Easter weekend.

Now, with the Mississippi River above flood stage, there seems to be no end in sight for the farmers in the Neunert and Jacob areas of Jackson County.

"Right now we're getting a raise in the river and that's making more seep water in here. And over the last week it's raised about three inches," said Glenn Twenhafel.

"Basically we're going to be stuck until the river gets down low enough to open up our locks."

Which Twenhafel says won't be anytime soon, because the Mississippi River must first get below 28-feet in order to open the locks on the levee.

Some of the fields did dry up just long enough to get some crops in, but the water is creeping back up.

Former Carbondale cop convicted of bank robbery

A former Carbondale police officer has been convicted of robbing a bank in 2008.

A Jackson County jury deliberated a few hours Friday before finding 29-year-old former patrolman James Gaddis guilty of armed robbery.

Authorities say Gaddis and a neighbor robbed First Southern Bank in Carbondale in October 2008, making off with nearly $23,000. Investigators say Gaddis made a fake 911 call before the holdup to divert police and used his police gun in the heist.

Gaddis was suspended from the police force after his arrest and was later fired.

Gaddis testified he was forced into robbing the bank by the neighbor after the alleged accomplice threatened his family.

Gaddis faces up to 45 years in prison when sentenced Aug. 26.

A judge has revoked Gaddis' bond.

Illinois stands alone in banning concealed carry

Wisconsin's governor says he'll sign the state's conceal and carry law making Illinois only state left in the country that bars people from carrying concealed firearms.

Many in Illinois hoped 2011 would be the year Illinoisans were allowed to carry a concealed firearm.

"There were a lot of people who were hopeful, looks like this year wasn't the year," said concealed-carry supporter John Gulley.

The bill that would have allowed it in Illinois didn't even get on the house floor.

"They had it in a committee that was all Chicago people and it wasn't coming out of there," said state Senator Gary Forby of Benton.

Now, Illinois is the only state in the country that does not allow some form of concealed carry. Which police say travelers should to keep in mind.

"We're very specific. If you're traveling with a gun through Illinois it has to be in a case and unloaded," said Illinois State Police Trooper David Sneed.
