Police, DNR announce increase patrols over holiday

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois State Police announced Wednesday there will be increased patrols in the water and on the road over the holiday weekend.

The IDNR and Conservation Police say they will be on the look-out for boater operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Town Creek Road to close July 5

Town Creek Road to close July 5

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Town Creek Road will be closed between Watt Hill Road and Big Muddy Levee Road near Sand Ridge beginning July 5.

The closure is part of the Big Muddy River bridge rehabilitation project, according to the Jackson County Department of Highways.

The road is expected to be open by August 5.

ISP warns against leaving kids, pets in hot cars

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois State Police is reminding people that children and pets should never be left alone in a hot car.

According to the police, recent research by the National Safe Kids campaign shows that at least 25 children die each year after being left in a hot car. During the summer months, the temperature inside a parked car can reach over 120 degrees in as little as 10 minutes.

Police day direct sunlight and a dark colored car can speed the process.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Student Recreation Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will be offering a free yoga session to those associated with SIUC.

Students, faculty and staff can attend the one-hour class from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28. The class will be in the recreation center's dance studio.

Following the class, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. will be a yoga teacher training information session with Daren Friesen and Mercedes Gomez. At the session you can learn about a yoga instructor certification class that will be coming to campus for the first time later in the year.

Friesen is the founder of the Moksha Yoga Center in Chicago, Ill. It opened in 1999 and is now one of the largest yoga studios in the Midwest.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Carbondale Chamber lunch line will be Wednesday, June 29.

Lunch will be at DiMaggio's Italian Ristorante in Carbondale, a new chamber member. It will be from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

DiMaggio's new location is at 1040 East Walnut Street.

Storms, flooding cause damage in the Heartland

High winds damaged several buildings in St. Francois County overnight while Kentucky and Illinois residents dealt with flooding into Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in St. Louis, Police reported a "possible tornado" around 11:12 p.m. Saturday just north of Leadington.

Officers say 2 large billboards and debris was blown over U.S. Route 67. Wind gusts were reported at 65 mph with 1" hail.

According to police, around 11:14 p.m. Saturday a funnel cloud was also reported between Desloge and Bonne Terre in St. Francois County.

The St. Francois Sheriff's Department reported no known injuries late Sunday morning.

Strong storms Sunday afternoon caused trees to come down in Van Buren in Carter County, Mo., according to police reports.

In Illinois, heavy rains caused localized flooding overnight.
