Fire damages Carbondale mobile home

Carbondale firefighters battled a fire at a mobile home Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to unit #23 of the Tan Tara Mobile Home Park just after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

No one was home at the time.

A woman living there told firefighters she and her boyfriend were getting ready to make something to eat, went to town to pick up some things, and forgot to turn off the stove.

The couple had only been living in the home for about six months and have no renters insurance.

Firefighters estimate the fire did more than $3,000 damage to the trailer and their belongings.

Youth cooking school at U of I Extension

Youth cooking school at U of I Extension

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The University of Illinois Extension is offering a youth cooking school June 21 through 24.

Children ages nine through 12 will learn how to read food labels and make the best choices while getting hands-on experiences using kitchen utensils and equipment. They will also learn how to keep food safe and prevent the spread of germs.

The school will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.. U of I Extension is located at 402 Ava Road in Murphysboro.

If you would like to register, you can call 618-687-1727 by June 17. The class is free, but limited to the first 20 students to sign up.

Group pickets in support of SIU graduate students

A group of people picketed in support of graduate students at Southern Illinois University. 

A handful of people gathered on SIU Carbondale campus Tuesday afternoon. 

AN IEA representative about the event regarding health insurance for 1,700 students.

"Well most people think that they have a health insurance plan.  They don't," said Jim Clark, IEA representative. "They're not regulated by the federal or state government.  This is totally owned by the university.  It could be changed tomorrow to make it better for all students at SIU-Carbondale."

The event was held in front of Anthony Hall.

20-year-old killed in crash, two others arrested for burglaries

A 20-year-old man was killed in a crash early Monday morning in Marion.

David Enoch-Shaw, 20, was found ejected from an overturned vehicle and declared dead at the scene by Williamson County Coroner Mike "Junior" Burke.

Travis, T. Pickens, 19, of Marion, the driver of the vehicle, and Felicia Hamburg, 18, of rural Carbondale were found a short time later. 

It happened at 5:40 a.m. Monday at the intersection of S. Liberty St. and W Simmons St.

Pickens will likely be facing a number of traffic charges related to the crash, according to the Marion Police Department.

Pickens and Hamberg were also arrested for burglaries at three gas stations in Marion on June 13.

Mobile Disaster Recovery Centers in several towns

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has Mobile Disaster Recovery Centers in several Heartland towns.

They are in Cape Girardeau County to help recent severe storms, flooding, and tornado victims with their applications for disaster aid.

The MDRC is at the Shawnee Park Center at 835 S. West End Blvd. in Cape Girardeau until 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, June 14 through Saturday, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It will remain open through June 18.

Personnel from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration will be on hand to meet with storm victims to answer any disaster assistance questions and to help complete their SBA disaster loan applications.

The Disaster Recovery Center will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff.  The DRC will close at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 18.

4K for Cancer bike ride coming to Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The 4K for Cancer bike ride will be making its way through Carbondale Wednesday.

Twenty-seven college students from across the United States will be participating in the bike ride from Baltimore, Md. to San Francisco, Calif. The group will be leaving Cave-in-Rock Wednesday morning and arriving in Carbondale in the late afternoon.

They will be cycling to the First United Methodist Church located at 214 West Main Street.

The event is a non-profit dedicated to supporting and uniting cancer communities across the country by spreading awareness, raising funds and fostering hope. According to the Zachary Turner, the leg leader, they have raised $450,000 for cancer centric charities this year.

Turner lived in Carbondale when he was younger and he says his parents attended Southern Illinois University.

Ameren: Tips to prevent copper theft

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - According to Ameren, thieves are risking their lives and the lives of innocent people to steal copper and other metals with a high global price.

Ameren says copper thefts can cause extensive power outages and fires that could injure or kill innocent people. Not only has copper been stolen from Ameren utility facilities but thieves have targeted copper wire and pipes at businesses, private homes and apartments.

Ameren offers these tips as the best line of defense against copper theft:

  • If you have information about a copper theft, report it immediately
  • Immediately report any suspicious activity around Ameren utility electric substations or other utility facilities
  • When away from home, make sure your house and outbuildings are securely locked. If you are gone for an extended period of time, notify police and have a trusted friend or neighbor watch your property.
