Two Carbondale women arrested for property damage

Two Carbondale women were arrested early Wednesday morning for property damage, stemming from damage of a car with a baseball bat.

According to Carbondale Police, Chynna C. Jones, 20, and Casey L. Cunningham, 20, both of Carbondale were arrested for criminal property damage.

Police responded to the 1200 block of East Grand Avenue on Wednesday where officers say around 3:30 a.m., a 2011 Ford Mustang was heavily damaged with a baseball bat.

According to police, witnesses saw two females flee the area. 

After investigating police identified and arrested Cunningham and Jones for felony criminal damage to property.

The suspects were taken to the Jackson County Jail, according to investigators.

Police say the investigation into the incident is continuing.

Disaster declaration for 14 southern Ill. counties

The federal government approved a federal disaster declaration to help people and businesses in 14 southern Illinois counties.

Under the disaster declaration, people and businesses in Alexander, Franklin, Gallatin, Hardin, Jackson, Lawrence, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Saline, White and Williamson counties are now eligible to apply for federal disaster assistance.

Carbondale Chamber June luncheon

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The June monthly members luncheon for the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce will be June 14.

The luncheon will be from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carbondale Civic Center and this month it will have a Parks and Recreation theme.

It will feature guest speakers from the Carbondale Park District, Touch of Nature and the SIU Recreation Center. Winners from the Saluki Pride Dawg Jog 5K and the Fun Day Golf Scramble will also be honored.

The luncheon costs $10 for chamber members who RSVP and $15 for non-members or those that did not RSVP.

Benefit reading for Joplin at SIUC

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A poet and the director of the creative writing master of fine arts program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has planned a benefit reading for Joplin, Mo. on June 14.

The event, "Langston Out Loud: A Benefit for Joplin," will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Harry T. Moore Auditorium in Faner Hall, Room 1326. It will feature readings from Langston's poetry and door prizes. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.

Langston Hughes was born in Joplin. He is a noted poet, novelist, playwright and columnist that was part of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s.

Some of Hughes' most famous poems include: "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain," Montage of a Dream Deferred" and "I, Too, Sing America."

Sheriff's deputy charged with 20 felony counts

A Pulaski County Sheriff's deputy is accused of giving weapons to her husband who is a convicted felon.

Tara M. Kern, 38, of Villa Ridge is charged with two counts of official misconduct, 16 counts of unlawful sale of firearms, and two counts of obstructing justice, according to the Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds.  Edmonds is acting as a special prosecutor in Pulaski County.

Kern is accused of providing firearms to her husband, William A. Kern, who is a convicted felon in 2010 and 2011.

She is accused of giving him weapons that were obtained by her in her official capacity as a Pulaski County Sheriff's deputy.

Kern is also accused of making false statements to police and concealing evidence during the investigation.

Police arrested Kern on June 9.

She was taken to the Jackson County Jail in Murphysboro on $50,000 bond.

SIUC offering $40,000 in cash to winning student entrepreneur

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale will be hosting their first student entrepreneurship contest.

SIUC is offering the winner of the contest $40,000 in cash to help them start businesses in Southern Illinois.

The event, Collegiate CampCEO 2011 - Saluki Operation Bootstrap, combines an entrepreneurship contest with a new college incarnation of CampCEO and the Operation Bootstrap. According to SIUC, this experience offers students the opportunity to brainstorm, innovate, study and plan real-world businesses and present their proposals for business experts to judge.

"This is a great opportunity for our students to jump-start successful careers in business," said Chancellor Rita Cheng.

Southern Ill. Cancer Institute receives $4,000 award

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois Healthcare's Cancer Institute will receive  a $4,000 award to help implement the Cancer Transitions program after over 1,651 people from the region voted for them.

Along with the financial award, SIH will receive full access to the LIVESTRONG Community Impact Project resources. The resources include up to 60 LIVESTRONG Guidebooks and the Cancer Transitions Facilitator Manual, along with 40 Cancer Transitions Participant Manuals.

"All of us are so excited about the community support enabling our organization to bring Cancer Transitions: Moving Beyond Treatment to cancer patients in Southern Illinois," said SIH Cancer Institute Director Jennifer Badiu.

According to SIH, over 340,000 votes were cast in the online grants race for the project.

LIVESTRONG is designed to support , educate and empower people with cancer in the transitional period after treatment.
