Carbondale Chamber to host ribbon cutting April 30

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce will hold a Ribbon Cutting on Tuesday, April 30 at 5 p.m. at The Place located inside of University Mall.

This new Southern Illinois Healthcare facility is designed to help community members find helpful resources for their health and well-being. An open house will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a ceremony and Ribbon Cutting at 5 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres, refreshments and music will be provided.

This event is open to the public.

IDOT announces launch of website for Illinois Bike Transportation Plan

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Transportation is pleased to announce the launch of an online web portal for the Illinois Bike Transportation Plan.

You can click here to visit the site.

It provides a comprehensive overview of the plan and offers the public several opportunities to submit feedback, track plan progression and collaborate with IDOT.

During the coming months, the site will be populated with additional resources and updated outreach information via the Timeline tool. The site will also host an interactive public engagement tool that will allow the public to submit bicycle policy and route recommendations. Finally, the site will provide helpful links to the public and instructions on ordering free Illinois bike maps.

SIU holds fashion show to display student designs

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS)- SIU Carbondale will hold its annual student showcase and runway fashion show Thursday night.

The event is designed to help seniors in the Fashion Design and Merchandising program display their ensembles of clothes for young women.

The show starts at 7 in the Student Center Ballroom D.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

A Summit of Hope May 14 joins different parole offices

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The District 5 Parole Office, Jackson County Health Department and Treatment Alternatives for a Safe Community will host A Summit of Hope event on Tuesday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Summit is designed to provide a "one-stop" environment for the local parolee to obtain the necessary help to move past barriers which may be preventing him or her from leading a succesful life.

AMP offers scholarships for communications students

(KFVS) - Tri-State Advertising & Marketing Professionals is now accepting applications for the 2013 scholarship program, which will award up to three $500 scholarships for the fall 2013 academic year.

Students from the following schools are eligible to apply for the scholarships: Southeast Missouri State University, Mineral Area College, Three Rivers College, Murray State University and Southern Illinois University – Carbondale.

Applicants must be pursuing a degree in marketing, advertising, public relations, mass communications, graphic design, radio/television production or a related field and have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Special consideration will be given to students displaying leadership in the college or university’s official club in one of the previous areas. The completed application, along with supplementary materials, must be received by May 31 to be considered.

Illinois Governor Quinn talks affordable housing

CHICAGO, IL (KFVS)- Governor Pat Quinn spoke Wednesday at the annual Illinois Governor's Conference on Affordable Housing where he addressed home ownership opportunities.

According to his office, the Governor also talked about helping working families stay in their homes and stabilizing communities.

"Homeowners are the foundation of thriving neighborhoods that strengthen our state," Governor Quinn said. "Being able to access affordable, safe, quality homes and rentals is important to the stability of our communities and spurs job creation. By working together with our dedicated federal, local and private partners, we will drive our economy forward by creating and sustaining affordable housing across Illinois."

The two-day event at the UIC Forum drew approximately 600 attendees dedicated to ensuring access to safe and decent housing for Illinois' working families, Veterans, seniors and people with disabilities.
