Community Cinema presents 'The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights' | Arts & Culture

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The public is invited to a free Community Cinema screening and discussion of the film The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights.
The event will be held on Saturday, February 23 at 2:30 p.m. at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 West Main.
WSIU and the Carbondale Public Library are co-sponsoring the screening.
Dr. Derrick Williams, Assistant Director of the SIU Carbondale Center for Inclusive Excellence, Dr. Robbie Lieberman, Professor in the SIU Carbondale History Department, and Rev. Sidney Logwood of Rock Hill Baptist Church and past president of the Carbondale Chapter of the NAACP will facilitate a discussion after the film.
The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights follows Whitney Young Jr.'s journey from segregated Kentucky to head of the National Urban League.
Unique among black leaders, Young took the fight directly to the powerful white elite, gaining allies in business and government, including three presidents.
He had the difficult tasks of calming the fears of white allies, relieving the doubts of fellow civil rights leaders, and responding to attacks from the militant black power movement.
WSIU and the Carbondale Public Library will continue to host Community Cinema screenings at the library at 2:30pm on the last Saturday of each month through June.

Community Cinema is a national civic engagement initiative of the Independent Television Service and the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens.
The project brings to light unforgettable stories about unique individuals, underrepresented communities, or pivotal moments in history.
It is the largest public interest outreach program in public or commercial television.
Carbondale is among over 100 cities nationwide that are participating in the project.
