SIUC to host higher education expert as keynote speaker

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A higher education expert will speak at Southern Illinois University on Tuesday, April 12.

Thomas G. Mortenson will talk to students during Inauguration Week about how public policy affects access to college. Mortenson will speak at John C. Guyon Auditorium in the Morris Library at 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Mortenson is a senior scholar in Washington, D.C. at the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education.

Morris Library hosts "The Teeter Family Papers"

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Morris Library at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will present "Other People's Letters: The Teeter Family Papers" on April 9.

The free presentation will be from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the John C. Guyon Auditorium and is open to the public.

The Special Collections Research Center will present the letters that chronicle the events of a family from the late 19th century through 1977.

The letters are between three children of Horace Hollister Teeter and Nancy Belle Teeter along with a nephew and his wife and son. Library staff and community members will portray the Teeters by reading their letters and giving an authentic view of life in Carbondale and Southern Illinois in the late 19th century until 1977.

39th annual Foreign Language day at SIUC

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The thirty-ninth annual Foreign Language day at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will be Thursday, April 7 in the Student Center.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will host the event from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Spring 2011 Professional Etiquette Dinner at SIUC

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale is hosting their annual etiquette dinner to teach students how to present themselves at a business or formal dinner.

The dinner will be Wednesday, April 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Lentz Hall dining room 5.

While dining on a five-course meal, students will learn how to make a good impression at business meetings, seminars, interviews or social occasions. Students will learn also learn things like what clothes to wear to make a good impression, proper handshake techniques and confidently presenting themselves during interviews.

Tickets are $15 each and you can buy them in the Residence Hall Dining Office on the lover level of Grinnell Hall. You must buy tickets in advance and no later than Friday, April 8.

The office hours include 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

It is recommended to wear office attire to the dinner.

Spring Fling at SIUC hosted by Student Center

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Student Center will host a Spring Fling on Friday, April 8.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and according to organizers will include indoor and outdoor activities that re-create a spring break atmosphere. Some of the activities include games, live music, prizes and food specials.

Everything but the food is free and everyone is invited but only SIUC students can win tickets by playing the games. The tickets will go into a drawing for a chance to win a bike, Nikon camera, Shryock event tickets and gift cards.

New PBS film screening in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Varsity Center for the Arts will be screening a new film from PBS on Saturday, April 2.

The film, "American Experience: Freedom Riders," will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Reverend Rick Jackson of Carbondale will introduce the film and moderate a discussion afterwards until 6 p.m.

The original freedom riders Tom Armstrong of Chicago and Genevieve Houghton of Carbondale will be at the discussion to share their experience and answer questions from the audience.

37th Annual World Hunger Sale in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Carbondale's Church Women United will hold their 37th Annual World Hunger Sale on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9.

The event is a yard sale and auction to raise money to fight hunger. It will be at the Newman Center on Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The yard sale will have household items, furniture, clothing, toys, jewelry and books. The auction will be at 10 a.m.
