'Vagina Monologues' Feb. 15 at SIUC to feature students, local women

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Vagina Monologues will be performed Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16 at 7 p.m. in Lawson Hall at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Tickets are $7 for students and $10 for the general public. All proceeds will go to benefit the Women's Center.

The director is Sarah Fassig.

This year, the Vagina Monologues will be performed on Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Lawson Hall, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Ticket are $7.00 Students; $10.00 General All proceeds go to benefit the Women's Center. This year's performance features not only students of SIU, but also local women aging in range from 16 to 41 from across the Southern Illinois region.

Carbondale hosts maple syrup making workshops

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS)  -  The City of Carbondale will host two Maple Syrup Making Workshops at Cedar Lake on Saturday, February 9 at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m.

Participants will learn tree identification, tree tapping and evaporating techniques. The tricky aspects of finishing off syrup and even making candy will also be covered. 

Folklore about this historic past-time will be woven throughout this naturally wholesome experience.

The City says activity will culminate with a sweet sample of the finished maple syrup product. It will take place at the Cedar Lake Supervisor’s Shop and office, 1705 Cedar Creek Road. 

The event, which is geared toward people of all ages, is free and open to the public.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois Irish Festival is sponsoring their annual Taste of the Grain on Saturday, January 19 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Copper Dragon, next to Pinch Penny Pub in Carbondale.

The fundraising event features a Scottish single malt whisky tasting, appetizers, and live music on Scottish pipes, harp, flute, keyboard, and guitar. Tickets are $30 per person (must be 21 or over). Advance reservations are recommended by calling Mike Shanahan at 549-3090.  

The occasion for this celebration of Scottish music and drink is the 254th birthday of Scotland's great poet and songwriter, Robert Burns, composer of the song that was sung worldwide on New Year's Eve, "Auld Lang Syne."  His birthday has become a day for celebrating all things Scottish. The tasting will include whiskies from the lowlands and the highlands of Scotland, and a single malt from Ireland for comparison.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Nathan Harris from Carbondale sent us some pictures of an owl and "snow angel" he created with his brother.

 

He says it took him 14 hours to build the angel and the owl took about six hours to create.

Who's been naughty or nice this year?

(KFVS) - A viewer sent us this picture of their Doberman puppy Chiko dressed as "Santa Paws."

We want to see pictures of your kids or pets sitting on Santa's lap. The pictures will be featured online and maybe on-air.

SIU student produces creative dress made from uncommon material

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Students in a fashion design and merchandising class at Southern Illinois University were assigned the task of designing a dress out of an unusual material.

Sabrina Dobrinick made this dress out of trash bags.

Lakeland Baptist Church hosts women's conference

Lakeland Baptist Church hosts women's conference

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -  Lakeland Baptist Church is hosting a women's conference January 26 entitled "Because He Loves Me."

The featured speaker for the conference will be Elyse Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick is a frequent speaker at women's conferences and has written several award winning books including "Women Helping Women".

Tickets are $20 through the end of December and $25 after December 31.
