Carbondale Public Library to hold book signing, reading Dec. 5

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Father Jack Frerker will be giving a reading from his new novel, "Crosswords," at the Carbondale Public Library Meeting Room on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

 

In his seventh novel, Father John in Algoma discovers notes in his newspaper box in the form of crossword puzzle answers and soon realizes they signify a threat to his life.

Signed copies will be available for purchase.

Carbondale Public Library to host Saluki Writers Workshop

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS)  -  The Carbondale Public Library is hosting an event for those with an affinity for writing or reading short stories.

The Saluki Writers Short Stories Workshop will be Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Carbondale Public Library. 

Participants are asked to bring in short stories they have read or ones they have written/are in the process of writing.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

There is no sign up or registration.

'The Unites States is a Folk Song' presentation at SIUC

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - "The Unites States Is a Folk Song" will be presented Monday, November 5 at 7 p.m. by Randall E. Auxier, Professor of Philosophy, Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Auxier is an active musician and songwriter, playing for the last seven years with the Bone Dry River Band, and an amateur (but serious) musicologist. The program examines the music popular during the era of the Civil War and the part it played in creating America’s modern popular music industry.

The presentation will be at the General John A. Logan Museum at 1613 Edith Street.

'Wizard of Oz' comes to Historic Liberty Theater

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Historic Liberty Theater in downtown Murphysboro will host a showing of the classic "Wizard of Oz" on Saturday, October 6 at 7 p.m.

The theater says admission is by donation and all proceeds support the ongoing restoration and maintenance of the Theater, now on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Metalsmith Society conference coming to Southern Ill.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois Metalsmith Society's annual conference and auction will take place Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22.

This year's visiting artist is John Haley III from Denver, Colo., whose work takes organic motifs and elaborate decoration from art nouveau and puts them into sci-fi sculpture.

Haley will begin demonstrating at 9 a.m. on Friday in the Pulliam Industrial wing of the SIUC Campus, with his artist lecture following at 3 p.m. at the University Museum Auditorium. The juried student exhibition reception will then begin at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, the events will move to Evergreen Park in Carbondale for blacksmith demonstrations by SIU students. There will be a Silent Fine Art Auction and a Live Auction with auctioneer Mike Hobbs. The demonstrations will begin at 3 p.m. with the silent auction beginning at 4 and the live auction starting at 6.

Register now for the 48th Annual State Fiddler Contest on Oct. 21

(KFVS) - The 48th Annual State Fiddler Contest will be Sunday, October 21 at the Thelma Keller Convention Center in Effingham, Ill.

Presented by the Illinois Old-Time Fiddlers Association, the contest will start at 1 p.m. General admission is $5 and children 8 years old and younger are free.

The purpose of the Association is to preserve the old time fiddle music and to pass it on to future generations. They say they welcome and encourage fiddlers of all ages to enter. They are hoping for contestants of all ages and from all areas in Illinois.
