Murphysboro Historic Properties partner named to state board

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - A Murphysboro woman has been appointed to office on the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council.

Rachel Malcom Ensor of Murphysboro is the new Vice Chair of the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council.

The Advisory Council reviews and recommends those properties which have been submitted for the National Register.

Malcom Ensor is in her second year of service on the Council and will serve in the leadership position for a one year term.

Candidates are recommended based on professional expertise in the fields including architectural history, archeology, and historical preservation advocacy.

Malcom Ensor is the first Southern Illinois resident to serve on the Council of 15.

Malcom Ensor also serves on the Illinois Association of Historic Preservation Commissions Board of Directors, and is the current Chair of the Murphysboro Historic Preservation Commission.

Brehm Preparatory School to perform "Breaking News"

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The annual Brehm Preparatory School play wil be Saturday, May 12 at 7 p.m.

The play is called "Breaking News" and is written by Tim Kochenderfer. It is about Channel Eight, Detroit's least-watched newscast.

According to the school, for the last several months, play sponsors Geo Flint and Jen Conwell-Barnes and students have been dedicating their spare time to prepare for the play. Brehm students have the opportunity to be a part of the cast, as well as work as stage hands, build the set, backgrounds and props.

The doors will open to the public at 6:30 p.m. The event is free, but donations are accepted.

Fundraiser for Southern Ill. Irish Festival scheduled for Sat.

(KFVS) - The annual Pub Night and Fish Fry, a fundraiser for the Southern Illinois Irish Festival, will be Saturday, May 5.

The fundraiser will be at the Carbondale Elks Club, 220 W. Jackson Street, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Food will include fish, chips, slaw, vegetarian options, soda bread and homemade desserts.

Organizers say music will be provided by The Dorians and Celtic harp player Christa Ashton. They say a silent auction will also take place and activities for children will be provided.

Tickets are $14 in advance for adults and $16 at the door, $11 for students and $5 for children 12 and under. Admission after 8 p.m. is $5. For advance tickets, you can click here to buy online or send a check to:

Saluki Pow Wow to kick-off Friday

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The 2012 Southern Illinois Saluki Pow Wow will be Friday, April 13 through Saturday, April 14.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. on Friday and the Grand Entry will be at 6 p.m. On Saturday, doors open at 10 a.m. and the Grand Entry will be at noon and 6 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. It will include traditional Native American arts, crafts and food.

Carbondale Public Library sponsors teen poetry contest

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Teenagers, ages 12 to18 or grades 7 through 12, are invited to participate in the Library’s 4th annual Teen Poetry Contest.

Entries will be accepted now through April 13. Entry forms are available at the Carbondale Public Library and also from the library’s website, www.carbondale.lib.il.us. Cash prizes will be given at the Poetry Contest Event to be held on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m.

According to the library, this program is free.

Regional historian to sign copies of new book

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A regional historian will be signing copies of his book on Saturday, April 7 at the Bookworm bookstore in Carbondale.

Herbert K. Russell will be signing copies of "The State of Southern Illinois: An Illustrated History," starting at 1 p.m.

ussell is formerly the Executive Director for College Relations at John A. Logan College. He is a literary scholar and Southern Illinois historian who has been a college teacher, an editor and a writer. He is the author of "Edgar Lee Masters: A Biography" and editor of "A Southern Illinois Album, Southern Illinois Coal: A Portfolio," and "The Enduring River: Edgar Lee Masters' Uncollected Spoon River Poems."

2012 Sustainable Living Film Series to start March 2

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The 2012 Sustainable Living Film Series will start their second season with "Vanishing of the Bees" on Friday, March 2.

The film will start at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by an answer-style discussion. Organizers say the emcee for the discussion will be Carolyn Deane, beekeeper at Dayempur Farm in Anna, Ill.

The event will be at The Longbranch Coffeehouse at 100 E. Jackson, in the historic town square of Carbondale.
