MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - Are you interested in becoming a Cub Scout leader?

The Kaskaskia District, Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America is offering basic Cub Scout leader training on Saturday, March 3rd.

The training will take place at Murphysboro United Methodist Church at 1500 W. Pine Street. The training session begins at 9:00 a.m.

The Stage Company celebrates 30th anniversary with "Inherit the Wind"

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Stage Company will be celebrating their 30th anniversary with a commemorative production of "Inherit the Wind" on Feb. 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26.

The production is about the classic courtroom drama and fictionalized account of the Scopes' "Monkey Trial" that served as their pilot production back in 1982. To highlight the anniversary, the company says they will feature several special events such as: history exhibits in the Varsity Gallery and in the Carbondale Civic Center, receptions before each performance for audience members and invited guests and a special opening night ribbon cutting to launch the company into their fourth decade of community theater.

The play runs Feb. 17, 18, 24, 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 19, 26 at 2 p.m. at The Varsity Center for the Arts, 418 S. Illinois Ave., Carbondale.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

4th Annual Mystery Dinner Theater to benefit LifeSavers

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The LifeSavers Training Corp. will host their 4th Annual Mystery Dinner Theater on Saturday, Feb. 18.

The dinner will be at the Murphysboro Event Center, 1401 Walnut Street. Doors open at 5 p.m. to view auction items while featuring music by "Meridian 90." The show starts at 6 p.m.

The group says this year's production by Terri Addison's Abbey Ridge Players is titled "Final Cut."

The dinner is a fundraiser event for LiveSavers training, peer support, suicide and crisis-prevention training program for high school and college students.

Local author to offer booksigning, workshops

Local author to offer booksigning, workshops

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A local author will hold a book signing at The Bookworm in Carbondale.

Edmond P. DeRousse of Sparta will be signing copies of his book, The Adventures of a Common Man on Saturday, January 28th beginning at 1:00 p.m. The novel is about Pete Russey, a man from Southern Illinois who goes on various adventures including an alien encounter in Roswell, NM.

DeRousse will also present a workshop at two different times and locations. He'll conduct the "Publish Your Manuscript" workshop at John A. Logan College in Carterville and at Pinckneyville's Rend Lake Campus. The workshop at John A. Logan College will take place on Wednesday, February 8th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The workshop in Pinckneyville will take place on Tuesday, March 6th from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Author to speak at John A. Logan Museum

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - Best-selling author Jim Loewen will speak at the General John A. Logan Museum on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.

Loewen's presentation called "Lies My Teacher Told Me About Slavery and the Civil War" is the first in a series of bi-monthly programs focusing on Southern Illinois and the Civil War.

From Decatur, Ill., Loewen attended Carleton College and later earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He first taught at Tougaloo College and in 1974, co-authored "Mississippi Conflict and Change," which won the Lillian Smith Award for Best Southern Nonfiction in 1975. When the Mississippi Textbook Publishing Board did not approve this book for use in the state school system, Loewen challenged them in court and won.

MURRAY, KY (KFVS) - Little girls and boys have the chance to compete in some pageants in the Heartland put on by America's Best Pageant and Beautiful Me Productions.

Contestants will compete in beauty and outfit of choice with the theme Gumdrops and Lollipops. 

Every child gets a crown and trophy.

Informational meeting for 4-H Shooting Sports Program

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - An informational meeting will be held soon to talk about a 4-H shooting program.

Thanks in part to a $1,000 grant from the Illinois 4-H Foundation, the Jackson County Extension 4-H Shooting Sports Program will be able to expand their shooting sports program for novice and experienced youth between the ages of 8-18.

4-H Shooting Sports includes air rifle, archery, clay target shotgun, and .22 rifle. Those involved will learn various skills including marksmanship, safe and responsible use of firearms and bows, and developing competitive skills that could help them progress in other areas of shooting sports.

If you'd like to know more, an informational meeting will be held at the University of Illinois Extension Jackson County Office in Murphysboro. That is located at 402 Ava Road.
