New music scholarship established at SIUC

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A new scholarship has been established at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for students in the School of Music.

The Larry Reynolds Memorial Scholarship was recently established in memory of the former piano technician. The scholarship is open to new and returning students studying music at SIU Carbondale. Preference will be given to graduates who are incoming freshmen or current students.

If no Herrin students are eligible, preference will then be given to transfer students from John A. Logan College. The scholarship will be awarded each year.

According to his wife, Judy, Larry Reynolds was an avid musician and loved by many in the School of Music.

Local author to sign book about Tri-State Tornado

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The author of a book about the 1925 Tri-State Tornado will be on hand for a book signing.

Angela Mason wrote Death Rides the Sky: The Story of the 1925 Tri-State Tornado. It tells the story of March 18, 1925 when a huge tornado ripped through Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, killing nearly 700 people.

The book signing will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 7th at Bookworm bookstore. The store is at 618 E. Walnut St. in Eastgate Shopping Center.

SIU students to attend prestigious theater festival

SIU students to attend prestigious theater festival

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A Southern Illinois University student will have a play featured at a national festival.

According to a release from the university, the student-written play "Risata, Sciocco... Risata!" will be presented at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Region III in January. Written by doctoral student Thomas Campbell of Arvada, Colorado, the play will be performed three times at the festival: 11:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. On January 6th, and 9:00 a.m. on January 7th.

Campbell's play was performed at SIU in October. It was one of hundreds reviewed by KCACTF representatives. It's one of only eight full-length plays offered at the festival.

Several other students will also participate in the festival.

12 days of winning through Illinois contest

12 days of winning through Illinois contest

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Agriculture will hold a "12 Days of Christmas Contest."

It runs from December 14-25. To participate, you need to become a fan of the department on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. The agency will randomly pick a winner each day. The winner will get an Illinois product and an assortment of cooking supplies donated by the American Egg Board.

It's part of an effort to raise awareness about Illinois food products available to the public.

(KFVS) - A viewer sent us this picture of their pet Taco dressed as "Santa Paws."

Taco's lap might be too small, but we want to see pictures of your kids or pets sitting on Santa's lap. The pictures will be featured online and maybe on-air.

String band to play Christmas concert

String band to play Christmas concert

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - A Murphysboro string band will play a Christmas concert.

The Smoky Hollow String Band will play Saturday, December 17th at the General John A. Logan Museum. The concert is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.

The band features John Basden, Joanne Long, Don & Lori Buedel, Fran Baumann, Jim Jennings, John Jeschke, and Kenny Lipe. The group will play various Christmas carols and old-time music.

Tickets are $7.50 in advance or $10 at the door. Kids ages 12 and under can get in for free. Tickets can be purchased at the museum at 1613 Edith Street Tuesday-Sunday between 1:00-4:00 p.m.

There will be light refreshments served at the concert.
