Hughes Gallery to feature Illinois artists

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - A Christmas gallery will feature Illinois artists.

The 2011 Hughes Gallery Christmas show will take place on December 10-11 and 17-18. It's open from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. If you'd like to check it out, the gallery is at 1603 Edith Street in Murphysboro. The event is also part of Murphysboro Hometown Christmas.

The items are priced for everyone. Organizers say none of the items on display will cost more than $50.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The University Mall will host a pageant and baby contest on December 3 at 4 p.m.

The Miss Sunburst Model Search and Baby Contest will take place in front of Macy's. Winners will go to the state finals in May to represent their county. Entries are being accepted now and everyone will receive a trophy.

The baby contest is for boys and girls. Age groups include:

  • Baby - Under one year
  • Tiny - 1 year
  • Little - 2 and 3 years

A king and queen will be chosen in each age group. They will receive a crown and trophy and runners-up in each age group will receive a crown and trophy.

The model search is for girls, ages four to 27 years old. Age groups include:

  • Four to six
  • Seven to ten
  • Eleven to thirteen
  • Fourteen to seventeen
  • Eighteen to twenty-seven

A winner in each age group will receive a crown and trophy and runners-up will receive a trophy and crown.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Regional historian Darrel Dexter will talk about and sign copies of his new book on Saturday, Nov. 26 starting at 1 p.m.

The book signing for "Bondage in Egypt: Slavery in Southern Illinois," will be at the Bookworm bookstore located in the Eastgate Shopping Center on Ill. 13 East.

The book is dedicated to the study of slavery in Illinois. Although the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 banned slavery in the territory and state, Dexter documents how slavery legally existed in Illinois from 1720 to 1865.

Dexter, who now lives in rural Jonesboro, was born in Cairo and received history degrees from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a master's in history from Southeast Missouri State University.

Dance group hosts annual show

Dance group hosts annual show

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois Dance Company will host its annual fall show.

The group will perform on Friday, December 2nd and Saturday, December 3rd. The Friday show begins at 7:30 p.m. and the Saturday performance is at 2:00 p.m. Both shows will be held in Furr Auditorium in Pulliam Hall.

The Southern Illinois Dance Company began on the campus of Southern Illinois University in 1975. The group's performance will include ballet, contemporary, hip hop, and jazz.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - An annual silent auction will raise money for orphanages and schools in Bangladesh.

The 12th Annual For Kids' Sake Art Auction will be held from November 15th through December 9th.

Go Cold Turkey Bowl to mark 36th annual Great American Smokeout

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The SIU Student Health Services Wellness Center is teaming up with many area agencies and student groups to host a Go Cold Turkey Bowl to mark the American Cancer Society's 36th Great American Smokeout on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The turkey bowl will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes teams that will bowl with frozen turkeys to support the commitment to go "cold turkey" for one smoke-free day. The entry fee to participate in the Turkey Bowl will be one nonperishable food item or $1 that will be used to buy a food item.

In addition, smokers will sign a statement of commitment to quit smoking for one day and can choose to "adopt a turkey" by contributing $5, the approximate cost of a pack of cigarettes, which will be used to buy food donations. The adopted turkeys will be donated with other food items to local food pantries and shelters.
