Neighborhood Co-op Grocery hosts free Fair Trade educational tour | Business
JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) – Neighborhood Co-op Grocery will host a free educational tour called “Fair Trade … Striving for Peace Near and Far.”
The tour is part of the 11 Days for Peace program organized by Nonviolent Carbondale, a coalition that organizes and supports activities that promotes nonviolent and compassionate interactions within the community.
The tour will run from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Co-op located at 1815 W. Main St. at the Murdale Shopping Center in Carbondale.
Fair Trade is an economic model developed in the 1980s to help provide fair prices to farmers who had been exploited by large corporations and works to combat the demands of a competitive global economy.
These conditions have led to revolts and bloodshed, child and adult slavery, the exploitation of women, environmental devastation, impoverishment and disease.
At the Fair Trade tour, those interested will learn how Fair Trade promotes economic and environmental stability, the education of children and the empowerment of women.
The tour will also show how Brian Corcoran, the Co-op’s Merchandising Manager, learned first-hand about the positive effects of Fair Trade when he visited a coffee cooperative in Chiapas, Mexico.
The Fair Trade tour will educate participants about where and how items such as coffee, chocolate, tea and other products are grown and distributed by people who are trying to make a positive impact for the conscious consumer on the home front and farming families abroad.
