First Bank & Trust to host BBQ benefit

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The First Bank and Trust Relay for Life Team will serve food from Pat’s BBQ with proceeds going towards Relay for Life.

It will be  Friday, May 24 on the parking lot at the rear of the main bank in downtown Murphysboro.

According to Marsha Carter, lunch costs $7. That includes a Pat’s BBQ sandwich and a choice of two sides.  

Drinks and desserts will also be available, Carter said.

Hours will  be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 24.

11th Annual Bike to Work Day May 17

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The 11th Annual Bike to Work Day will be Friday, May 17.

According to the City of Carbondale, since 1956 the League of American Bicyclists has recognized the month of May as National Bike-to-Work Month, a national campaign to promote bicycling as a healthy and efficient transportation alternative.

Communities are encouraged to sponsor a Bike-to-Work Day giving metropolitan areas the opportunity to call attention to the benefits of bicycling and to increase safety awareness among bicyclists and drivers.

In Carbondale, the 11th Annual Bike-To-Work Day event will be held on May 17 with a gathering of bicyclists at the Town Square Pavilion for special events from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Trophies will be a warded to participants who travel the longest distance and for the organization that has the most people ride their bikes to work that day.

Hospice of Southern Illinois chosen as finalist 'Grow St. Louis' program

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS) - Hospice of Southern Illinois has been chosen as finalist in Monsanto, Grow St. Louis program.

On Monday, May 6,  Hospice of Southern Illinois Hospice was selected as a finalist in the Monsanto, Grow, St. Louis program.

Organizers say the program offers not-for-profit organizations grant money up to $20,000.

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The 28th Annual Fishing Expedition for Special Populations was held Wednesday, May 8 at Bleyer Lake.

More than 1,300 Special Population youngsters and adults, volunteers, and staff lined the shores of Bleyer Lake for this event. They spent the day fishing and were provided a picnic lunch. All of the fishing equipment is provided free of charge to the participants.

Bleyer Lake is located 1.5 miles south of Midland Inn, just off Country Club Road.

The participants came from southern Illinois schools and sheltered workshops in Jackson, Williamson, Union and other surrounding counties.

The event began at 9 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m.

Volunteers for the Fishing Expedition helped participants with their fishing equipment, baited fishing hooks and encouraged their efforts.

(KFVS) - The 28th Annual Fishing Expedition for Special Populations is scheduled for Wednesday, May 8 at Bleyer Lake.

Bleyer Lake is located about 1.5 miles south of Midland Inn, just off of County Club Road.

Over 1,300 special population youngsters and adults, volunteers and staff will line the shores of Bleyer Laek for this event. They will spend the day fishing and will be provided a picnic lunch. All of the fishing equipment is provided free of charged to the participants.

The participants will come from Southern Ililnois schools and sheltered worshops in Jackson, Williamson, Union and other surrounding counties. The event begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to help participants with their fishing equipment, bait fishing hooks and encourage their efforts. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, unless accompanied by a parent or school official.

Carbondale Police Department joins Click It or Ticket Campaign

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The 2013 Click It or Ticket campaign kicks off May 10 in Illinois.

According to Carbondale police, the purpose of the campaign is to help save lives by cracking down on those who do not buckle up through the Memorial Day holiday weekend. 

The Carbondale Police Department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and over 500 local law enforcement agencies across the state to save more lives by strongly enforcing seat belt laws.

“As we kick-off the busy summer driving season it’s important for everyone to buckle up every trip, every time, day or night – no excuses,” said Chief of Police Jody O’Guinn. “Our officers are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing a seat belt.”
