Liberty Theater offers 'cool' entertainment in August
MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The historic Liberty Theater in downtown Murphysboro are offering some "cool" entertainment in August.
Activities will include:
- Kid cartoons on the big screen on Wednesday, Aug. 1 and Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 1 p.m. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, admission is by donation and concessions will be available.
- The classic "Stand by Me" drama will be Saturday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. as two groups of teenagers duke it out to find a body. In the process, eventually overcomes, almost. On Saturday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. it's "Follow the Fleet," the 1936 musical comedy classic starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Look fast and watch closely because cameo roles feature Harriet Hilliard, Betty Grable, Lucille Ball and Tony Martin. Admission is by donation.
- On Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. Kenny Carr and the St. Andrew Blue Grass Mass Band, along with church choirs and more will present a fundraiser for the theater.
All event proceeds benefit the volunteer on-going restoration project of the Liberty, which is now a National Historic Site. Opening as the Tilford in 1913, it was closed, taken over by the City of Murphysboro for payment of taxes, and eventually was adopted by an all-volunteer entity.
