Carbondale breaks ground for new state-of-the-art fire station | Community Spirit

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Mayor Joel Fritzler announced that a groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Friday, February 1 at 10 a.m. for the new $3.1 million Carbondale Fire Station that will be located at 401 N. Glenview Drive.

The new facility will be a 12,400 square foot single-story brick building similar in design to the Carbondale City Hall/ Civic Center and the new Public Safety Center. 

“This facility is designed to meet the present and future needs of the Fire Department with four apparatus bays, seven bunk rooms, living and kitchen space, a workout room, a training room and office space for the Assistant Fire Chiefs and Training Officer," Fritzler said. "There will also be space to relocate the City’s Emergency Operations Center and Storm Watch Center from City Hall to this new facility. The building has been designed to be energy efficient and meets or exceeds all relevant energy codes as well as seismic standards.  Some design features will include a backup generator capable of powering the entire building, geothermal heating and air-conditioning for the living area, and provisions for the addition of future solar equipment."

The new station will replace the current west side station at the corner of Oakland Avenue and West Walnut Street, which is more than 50 years old. The new station has been relocated to better serve Carbondale’s west side.

The new Fire Station has been years in the planning. 

Design of the facility began in June of 2008 when the City Council approved the firm FGM of O’Fallon, Ill. for the architectural/engineering design of the new Fire Station.

In June of 2009, the property located on the southeast corner of Glenview Drive and Sycamore Avenue was purchased by the City for the development of the new Fire Station.

In October of 2011, the City Council approved the bond issue to fund the new station and since that time, work proceeded to move the project forward. It is anticipated that construction will be completed in the Fall of 2013.
