13th Annual For Kids' Sake Art Auction called a huge success

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - For Kids' Sake 13th Annual Art Auction held their closing reception Saturday, May 4 at the Longbranch Coffeehouse in Carbondale.

The reception raised $16,000 from the sale of over 170 pieces of art, gift baskets, raffles and donations. The event included musical entertainment by five local bands, including a Bengali student rock band and a Bollywood dance. Several children's groups also performed music and shared their creative talents in support of the orphans in Bangladesh. There was standing room only all throughout the night.

Shema Ruperto, the event organizer, was very pleased with the Art Auction.

"This was our best art auction to date," she said. "Not only did we raise $16,000, but people from all over Southern Illinois came together in support of our kids in Bangladesh. A six year old Southern Illinois boy's art sold for $35, which will feed a hundred kids in Bangladesh."

Keep Carbondale Beautiful announces Bright Spot Award

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Keep Carbondale Beautiful’s May 2013 Bright Spot Award was presented to the Evergreen Garden Club and the Friends of Carbondale Public Library for their enduring work on the Library’s Japanese Garden.

Begun in the 1980’s by the Evergreen Garden Club, the garden was recognized with a Bright Spot Award for the Library in 1990, one of the first such awards.

Since then, the Evergreen Garden Club has maintained this tranquil space at their own expense.

Last fall, seeing that the retaining wall was crumbling, the Club enlisted the help of the Friends to raise funds to rebuild the retaining wall, which was accomplished with great care thanks to Harville Masonry.

Library Director Diana Brawley Sussman said, “Their thoughtful cooperation honored the space and the library, lending a sense of peace and community to the Japanese Garden itself, and to the story of its existence.”
