Carbondale Chamber of Commerce to host press conference on electricity rates

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce will hold a press conference Wednesday, April 24 at 10 a.m. at the John A. Logan College Board Room.

The press conference will be to announce the details of a cooperation between 11 Chambers of Commerce in Southern Illinois, pooling the collective buying power of Southern Illinois businesses to negotiate "bulk" electricity rates for all chamber members.

Boil water order issued for part of Village of Gorham

GORHAM, IL (KFVS) - The Village of Gorham his issued a boil water order for Moonlight Drive at the top of Kinkaid Hill to Heiple Hill Road.

The boil order will be until further notice and is due to a cut water line. The water line cut serves about seven households.

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) -  Governor Pat Quinn and the Serve Illinois Commission have recognized five Southern Illinois residents and one business with the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award

“Volunteerism is the heart of Illinois, and I salute the thousands of individuals who give back every day to make our state a better place,” Governor Quinn said. “We honor this year’s award recipients for lending their time and talent, and for inspiring others to make a difference in communities all across Illinois.”

According to Gov. Pat Quinn's office, the Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards focus on five areas: Economic Opportunity, Education, Environmental Conservation, Disaster Preparedness/Response, Health and Veterans’ Affairs.

Pub night, fish fry April 27 to benefit Irish Festival

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The fundraiser for the Southern Illinois Irish Festival has been moved from November to Saturday, April 27.

The Carbondale Elks Club will once again host Pub Night and provide fish and chips. There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 drawing and Christa Ashton on the harp.

Dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Keep Carbondale Beautiful’s Annual Spring Cleanup & Recycling Day

 

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Carbondale will get a facelift on the morning of Saturday, April 20.  

Keep Carbondale Beautiful’s Annual Spring Cleanup & Recycling Day will be based at Turley Park.

Volunteers can assemble starting at 8 a.m. to receive supplies and be assigned a location to clean up.  Individuals and community groups are welcome to participate. The event concludes at 12 p.m.  At the end of the day the total garbage and recyclables collected will be weighed and reported.

Organizers say the first 200 volunteers will receive a free T-shirt and lunch will be served starting after 11 a.m.    

Adopt-A-Spot groups have the option of doing their monthly cleanup on this day, or doing their spot early and tackling a new spot on this special day.

Jazz appreciation month at the historic Liberty Theater

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - April is “ Jazz Appreciation Month”   and Murphysboro High School and Middle School Jazz Bands will team up with guest artist Ron Coulter for a concert on Friday, April 19.

Show organizer, Middle School Band Director Nick Williams said tickets to the show are just $6 per person for the 7:00 pm event at The Historic Liberty Theater.

Organizers say thirty-nine members, who have a   history of excelling at both state and national competition, bringing home numerous Superior ratings.

Coulter’s impressive background includes lectureships in percussion, improvisation, and  jazz studies at Southern Illinois University and John A. Logan College, international tours, hundreds of appearances with  music greats like Glenn Miller and Harry James Bands, and with such artists at Al Martino and Marvin Hamlisch.

Carbondale Lions Club Pancake Days April 27-28

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Carbondale Lions Club will host their Pancake Days April 27 and 28.

The event will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. It will be at the town square freight pavilion in downtown Carbondale near the intersection of Main Street and Illinois Avenue.

You can buy tickets from any Lions Club member or at the door on Pancake Days. Adult tickets are $5 and tickets for children under 12 are $3.
