SIUC police investigating attempted robbery near campus

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety announced they are investigating a battery and attempted robbery on Wednesday, October 31 on the south side of Douglas Drive by Lot 23, which is at the intersection of Oakland Street and Douglas Drive.

According to DPS, the incident happened at 11 p.m. and involved a 19-year-old SIU student, who did not make a police report until Nov. 5. They say the student told police he was walking home on Thompson Point when two males approached, hit him and demanded money. Police say the victim was able to get away and run to his home.

DPS says the victim did not require medical treatment and he does not know which way the suspects ran.

The two suspects are African-American males in their early 20s. The first suspect is 5-feet, 9 inches tall, with a dark complexion and collar-length dreadlocks. He was wearing dark sweat pants and a hooded sweatshirt. The second suspect is 6 feet tall with a dark complexion. He was wearing dark sweat pants and a maroon or red hoodie.

Police advise members of the campus community to be aware of their surroundings at all times, and if traveling at night to use the Saluki Express, Night Safety Transit Service and Brightway Path. In addition, emergency call phones are located across campus, including on both overpasses.
