Rend Lake College Class of '13 crosses stage at 46th Commencement

INA, IL (KFVS) - Rend Lake College officials send their thanks and congratulations to the Class of 2013.

The 46th Annual RLC Commencement was held May 18 in James Waugh Gymnasium. Dr. Jeannie Mitchell, a psychology professor at RLC, was the guest speaker.

A total of 860 graduates were conferred 773 Associate Degrees and 651 Occupational Certificates.

Hospice of Southern Illinois holds volunteer appreciation dinner

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS) - Several volunteers were honored at the Hospice of Southern Illinois' volunteer appreciation dinner held in April.

30 years of service:

Adrienne Villotti of Mascoutah, Clare Schmidt of Belleville, Lucille Trentman of Mascoutah, and Sr. Leona Luechtefeld of Belleville.

The Butterfly Award:

Kathy Murphy of Fairview Heights, Ginny Costello of Collinsville, Marie & James Broshears of Royalton, Linda Rozycki of Glen Carbon, Dennis Blom of Edwardsville, and Jeanne Arro of Maryville.

The Hospice would like to thank all volunteers for their continued support and for sharing their time and talents to help patients and their families.

These dedicated volunteers are an integral part of the interdisciplinary team helping to provide care for those individuals during their end-of-life journey.

Material disaster prep base camp tours offered on May 16

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The public is invited to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale "Disaster Blaster" Open House at Southern Illinois Airport on Thursday, May 16.

The airport is located at 508 North Airport Road in Murphysboro. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is the Regional Hospital Coordinating Center for Illinois EMS Region 5, and provides support services to 23 hospitals in 22 counties in times of emergency or disaster, according to Southern Illinois Healthcare.

The airport site serves as base camp for Memorial Hospital's disaster preparedness units.

It houses 18 "Disaster Blaster" multi-functional mobile trailers.

The trailers are used as support services, such as a 300-bed field hospital.

First Bank & Trust to host BBQ benefit

First Bank & Trust to host BBQ benefit

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The First Bank and Trust Relay for Life Team will serve food from Pat’s BBQ with proceeds going towards Relay for Life.

It will be  Friday, May 24 on the parking lot at the rear of the main bank in downtown Murphysboro.

According to Marsha Carter, lunch costs $7. That includes a Pat’s BBQ sandwich and a choice of two sides.  

Drinks and desserts will also be available, Carter said.

Hours will  be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 24.

11th Annual Bike to Work Day May 17

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The 11th Annual Bike to Work Day will be Friday, May 17.

According to the City of Carbondale, since 1956 the League of American Bicyclists has recognized the month of May as National Bike-to-Work Month, a national campaign to promote bicycling as a healthy and efficient transportation alternative.

Communities are encouraged to sponsor a Bike-to-Work Day giving metropolitan areas the opportunity to call attention to the benefits of bicycling and to increase safety awareness among bicyclists and drivers.

In Carbondale, the 11th Annual Bike-To-Work Day event will be held on May 17 with a gathering of bicyclists at the Town Square Pavilion for special events from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Trophies will be a warded to participants who travel the longest distance and for the organization that has the most people ride their bikes to work that day.

Open House scheduled for Carbondale New School

Open House scheduled for Carbondale New School

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Carbondale New School Open House will be Thursday, May 16 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Open House will showcase student work including: Art, Science, History and Spanish. It is open to the public.

They are now enrolling students for 2013-2014 school year, for pre-k through eighth grade.
