'Organic Soil Fertility Strategies' field day Nov. 5 | Events
CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) – The Southern Illinois Farming Network will be sponsoring a field day in Carbondale Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The field day will be called “Organic Soil Fertility Strategies” and will be located at the Coutrysprout Farm from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The event targets all commercial growers seeking to increase yields while improving the health of the soil though natural measures.
The field day will be presented by Cara Bergschneider, a soil conservationist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and member of the Southern Illinois Farming Network.
The presentation will focus on variations in soil health based on different landscape and farming methods. Presenters will provide details on the effects of organic amendments on soil health and fertility. Participants will learn hands-on methods to determine soil quality characteristics.
Countrysprout Organics is a USDA Certified Organic farm operated by Bruce and Maryanne Chrisman. The Chrisman’s sell organic products at farmers markets in St. Louis and the new Carbondale Community Farmers Market. They also sell to the Neighborhood Co-op Grocery in Carbondale.
Field day participants are encouraged to stay for a potluck supper at the farm.
