Community health fair coming to Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS)  – The Carbondale Muslim Community in conjunction with Attucks Community Services, is hosting a community health fair to bring awareness to the importance of health education, screenings and early detection.

The health fair will be Nov. 17 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2011), low income residents report 5 to 11 fewer healthy days per month.

The health fair will be held in the Thomas School Gymnasium at 1025 N. Wall Street.Individuals living in poor social and economic conditions experience death at earlier ages, mostly attributed to reduced access to health care.

Various other social, economic, and environmental factors contribute to the continuous health decline in under-served communities (crime, poor nutrition, low family incomes, etc).

Enlisting the services of health-care professionals from Carbondale and surrounding counties such as Jackson County Health Department, the Old School House, the Women Center, Shawnee Health Services, and Wellness on Wheels (WOW), the health fair is co-sponsored by the Illinois Department of Public Health, Center for Minority Health Services, in conjunction with Legacy Training and Development Corporation, Inc.

Buses will be provided for those in need of rides.

For more information about the health fair and other community projects, call 618-549-0341 between the hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
