Jackson Co. Health Dept. to hold chemical collection April 20

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A free household chemical collection will be held in Carbondale at the SIU Arena’s south parking lot on Saturday, April 20.

This event helps Jackson County residents safely dispose of old and unwanted household chemicals. Waste can be dropped off at the site on the date of the event between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. only. This rain or shine event is open to Jackson County residents only, participants must show a valid state ID or utility bill with an eligible address for entry into the event.

To keep wait times short, participants are encouraged to consolidate loads with friends and neighbors.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - On Saturday, April 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.at the Carbondale Superblock, the Kohl’s Movers and Shakers will host "Spring into Motion," an event that will celebrate the completion of the fitness station set and teach families the importance of being active together.

The unveiling of the completed fit stations will be held at 11:30 a.m.

Also during this ceremony, the announcement of the 15 winners of the Southern Illinois Smoke-free Poster Contest will be announced. All winners in attendance will receive a prize bag. Additionally, each winner will have their posters incorporated into a smoke-free metal sign that will be located in a public place for all to see.

Lunch will be provided as well as instruction on using the fit stations, games for all ages, and a prize drawing for those attending.

Carbondale Co-op offers vegan/plant-based cooking class

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Neighborhood Co-op in Carbondale will offer another vegan cooking class that will focus on seasonal spring veggies and creative, tasty waves to enjoy healthy, fresh and local food.

The class will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 20 in the Co-op’s teaching kitchen. Cost for the class is only $20 for owners and $25 for non-owners. Each class includes an appetizer, soup, entrée, dessert as well as recipes and informational handouts.

In this class, we transition to local and seasonal ingredients such as fresh greens and peas and to honing one’s plant-based skills. Based on available ingredients, those taking the class will learn to make veggie-spring rolls using green wrappers (such as chard, collards or nori) and prepare fillings from nut cheeses, veggies, and grains.

Women vets will find unique information, services at Women Veterans Fair

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs is proud to offer the Illinois Women Veterans Fair, on Saturday, April 13.

This event will be held at the Southwestern Illinois College Liberal Arts Complex Conference Center, 2500 Carlyle Ave., Belleville, Ill. The event includes a complimentary light breakfast social, remarks from SWIC President Georgia Costello, Ph.D., IDVA Director Erica Borggren, herself a US Army veteran, and Maj. Gen. Barbara Faulkenberry, Vice-Commander, 18th Air Force, Scott Air Force Base.

Following the remarks, there will be panel discussions geared to help women veterans “own” their military experience, to transition more smoothly into civilian life, and to understand and better deal with Military Sexual Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder related to their military service.

Keep Carbondale Beautiful to hold paint exchange event April 13

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - On April 13, Keep Carbondale Beautiful is partnering with the Carbondale Sherwin-Williams store to offer residents the opportunity to dispose of unwanted, but usable paint or take home free paint.

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. people can bring in quarts or gallons of paint (at least 1/3 full) of latex or oil-based paint; later, from 1 to 3 p.m., people can come and pick up those same quarts or gallons as free paint. In between, Sherwin-Williams manager Mike Riley will supervise the sorting of paints according to type (latex or oil-based) and color.

The location for the exchange is Hickory Lodge, 1115 West Sycamore.

KCB ED Sarah Heyer said, “This will be a first for us, made easier with support from Sherwin-Williams, but we need to make sure we only get quarts and gallons, nothing industrial-sized.”
