Send holiday cheer to troops with 'Holiday Mail for Heroes' program

(KFVS) - The American Red Cross will be collecting and distributing cards that send words of encouragement, gratitude and cheer to America's heroes for the holiday season.

The Red Cross is inviting the public to send messages of thanks and holiday cheer until Dec. 7 by mailing them to:

To ensure that cards are delivered on time for the holidays, the Red Cross says they must be postmarked no later than Dec. 7. Individuals are asked to refrain from sending "care packages," monetary donations or using glitter or any other kinds of inserts with the cards.

According to the Red Cross, the company Pitney Bowes Inc. receives cards at the special Holiday Mail post office box, and screens them for hazardous materials. The company screens, packages and ships the cards at no charge.

Murphysboro Hometown Christmas opens registration for 2nd Annual Gingerbread House

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - Murphysboro Hometown Christmas is accepting applications for the annual Gingerbread House competition.

Starting Nov. 1 and running through Dec. 4 applications will be accepted along with an entry fee of $5 per individual or $10 per business. This is a fun event is a fundraiser for the Murphysboro Youth and Recreation Center. Applications and entry fee should be dropped off at the Murphysboro Youth and Rec. Center; 1818 Walnut Street; Murphysboro.

The contestant’s houses will be judged on Dec. 8 with a public viewing available for the sugary concoctions at the MYRC from the 8th to the 10th with an awards presentation Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.     

There will be several categories based on age and groups.

University Mall to host annual safe trick-or-treat, costume contest

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The University Mall will be hosting their annual mall-wide safe trick-or-treat and Mall-O-Ween costume contest event for all children ages 12 and under.

The event will be Wednesday, Oct. 31 with trick-or-treating from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the costume contest at 5 p.m. with registration starting at 4 p.m.

Age categories for the costume contest include: 0-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Organizers say first, second and third place winners in each category will receive prizes.

Carbondale police looking for volunteers for 'Pumpkin Patrol'

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Carbondale Police Department is looking for volunteers.

On Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the police department will be sponsoring a Halloween safety patrol called "Pumpkin Patrol."

Volunteers wearing orange safety vests and driving vehicles bearing the "Pumpkin Patrol" logo will be patrolling areas of the community where kids go to "trick-or-treat". Police say although they strongly encourage adults to accompany children, the volunteers will identify potential hazards to children and provide a place where children can turn if they feel threatened.

The department has sponsored the Pumpkin Patrol since 1992.

You can submit your favorite Halloween costume photo of an adult, child or pet and be entered for a chance to win prizes!

The KFVS12 Halloween Photo Contest started Tuesday, Oct. 2. The submission period is from 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday to 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The voting period runs from 12 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2 through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.

Prizes will be awarded for best children's costume, adult costume and best pet costume.

Murphysboro theater to host auditions for Youth Talent Show

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - Young people ages 13 to 17 are invited to apply for a spot at the Youth Talent Show at the Historic Liberty Theater in downtown Murphysboro.

The show is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Theater Director Lois Murphy says anyone interested should get the full details now.

Guitar players, dancers, singing groups, skitters, ventriloquists and clowns or any other entertaining skill will have his or her chance to hit the boards.

The Historic Liberty Theater, now on the National Registry of Historic Sites, continues to offer everything from classic films, live music and plays, gospel artists, to space for public meetings and rentals.
