SIU interns learn from cancer researchers

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has been hosting an internship program for four college students who are working with cancer researchers.

Students were chosen for the internship among 20 individuals based on their compeitive basis.

Morgan Echols will be working with Dale Hales, Ph. D., on ovarian cancer in Carbondale, Ill.  Echols is a senior at SIU Carbondale and she is from Murphysboro, Ill.

Anne Showwalter, a junior biochemistry major at Culver-Stockton College, is working with Daotai Nie, Ph.D. Showwalter is from Springfield, Ill. Nie has researched prostate and breast cancer.

Mitchell Elting will be working with Randolph Elble, Ph.D. Elting is a senior majoring in pre-med at SIU-Edwardsville and he is from Macomb.

Mariah Sisson, a junior biology major at Illinois college in Jacksonville and from Virden, Ill., will be working with Edward Gershburg, Ph.D. Gershburg has studied how the Epstein-Barr virus might be possibly linked to cancer development.
