Carbondale Friday Night Fair Farmer's Market to accept electronic cards

Carbondale Friday Night Fair Farmer's Market to accept electronic cards

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Carbondale Friday Night Fair Farmer's Market will now accept LINK, debit and credit cards.

A grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Illinois Department of Human Services allows an EBT machine to be available at the farmer's market.

The grant aims to boost the sale of Illinois-grown food and to provide access to fresh produce to low-income homes by enabling farmers' markets to accept Illinois LINK cards.

Previously free EBT machines required electricity, which is not always available at rural or community market locations.

Organizers hope the EBT machine will give the farmers' market vendors access to a new customer base.

The Friday Night Fair’s kick off celebration for the 2013 fair series will be held May 3, 2013 from 6-9 p.m. and will continue every Friday night in the months of May, June, August, and September.

Winter farmers market coming to Carbondale

Winter farmers market coming to Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - It seems that Carbondale is going to see a Winter Farmers Market this year.

According to Sarah Heyer, Exec. Director ofKeep Carbondale Beautiful the market will open on Saturday, December 1and will be held every Saturday (except Dec. 29) through March, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Heyer says the location will be at Thomas School, 1025 North Wall Street, where Principal Linda Flowers has offered the use of the school cafeteria.

Flowers said she was motivated by the lack of easy access to fresh produce in that neighborhood.

Carbondale Elementary School District 95 has been encouraging students to eat healthier, including more fresh fruits and vegetables, so this project meets those goals, according to Heyer.

The market is being organized by Heyer and Elissa Johnson, produce buyer at the Neighborhood Co-op.
