SIU basketball player suspended after DUI charge | News
CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS)- A Southern Illinois University basketball player is suspended after he was charged with driving under the influence.
Head coach Barry Hinson suspended guard Diamond Taylor indefinitely after he was charged with driving under the influence early Saturday morning.
"I'm extremely disappointed in Diamond," Hinson said in a release to the media. "We're in the business of educating student-athletes and teaching them how to conduct themselves on and off court, and this is a significant setback."
Taylor, a 6-foot-4 junior guard, played in 27 games and made nine starts last year for the Salukis. He averaged 3.2 points as a redshirt freshman in 2011 and 4.3 points as a sophomore last year, according to SIU.
Hinson said his team will not have the depth he desires after the suspension of Taylor and plans to redshirt as many as three players.
"The suspension puts enormous stress on our team by dwindling our numbers, but it was the best course of action for the long-term success of our program," Hinson said.
