Carbondale police investigate overnight shooting | News
Police are investigating an overnight shooting in Carbondale where one person was taken to the hospital.
It happened Sunday morning around 1:14 a.m. in the 200 block of West Main Street.
Witnesses say that two groups of men were arguing on the sidewalk at the intersection of South Illinois Avenue and West Walnut Street.
"There was a lot of yelling going on. And people started to running, next thing I heard was five or six gunshots. And everyone was running back towards Main Street," said Samuel Craft of Carbondale.
Moments before the shooting some of those involved had tried to get into the Icebox Bar & Grill.
"They tried to come in at the door. As a procedure the fellas are patted down and the women's purses are checked," said Karen Lee a hostess at the Icebox Bar & Grill. "They didn't want to cooperate to either of those things. So they were refused entry. They were never inside the bar."
According to Carbondale police, officers responded to the area for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a victim with a gunshot wound in that area and immediately called for medical assistance.
Police say the victim was taken by EMS to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation into the incident is continuing.
