Southern Ill. Cancer Institute receives $4,000 award

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Southern Illinois Healthcare's Cancer Institute will receive  a $4,000 award to help implement the Cancer Transitions program after over 1,651 people from the region voted for them.

Along with the financial award, SIH will receive full access to the LIVESTRONG Community Impact Project resources. The resources include up to 60 LIVESTRONG Guidebooks and the Cancer Transitions Facilitator Manual, along with 40 Cancer Transitions Participant Manuals.

"All of us are so excited about the community support enabling our organization to bring Cancer Transitions: Moving Beyond Treatment to cancer patients in Southern Illinois," said SIH Cancer Institute Director Jennifer Badiu.

According to SIH, over 340,000 votes were cast in the online grants race for the project.

LIVESTRONG is designed to support , educate and empower people with cancer in the transitional period after treatment. According to SIH, research shows that both men and women who participate can experience:

  • Less worry about the negative impacts of cancer
  • Better physical and social functioning
  • More commitment to physical activity
  • Improvements in fat-related dietary habits
