'Free Dentistry Day' May 31 in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - People in the Carbondale area can receive free limited dental work on May 31 as part of Free Dentistry Day.

People needing dental work can receive one free extraction or one free filling at University Place Dental at 1366 East Main Street on Friday, May 31.

Free Dentistry Day is dedicated providing dental care to the growing number of Americans without dental insurance.

Dr. Bryan Goldesberry and his team at University Place Dental, along with the assistance of Dr. Jodi Braid, Dr. Shahid Sharar, Dr. Jordan Spencer and Dr. Matt Kasiar, will be improving the oral health of those in need.

SIUC fashion show will showcase students’ designs

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Seniors in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Fashion Design and Merchandising program are busily preparing to show their original designs in the annual student showcase and runway fashion show.

Eight senior designers have been working feverishly on their eight ensembles of clothing for young women for the runway fashion show, which begins at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 26, in Student Center Ballroom D.

Admission is free, and the public is welcome.

 This Able Veteran Heroic Veterans service dogs to graduate

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -  This Able Veteran Heroic Veterans service dogs are set to graduate on Friday, April 12.

This will be the second graduation the group.  The organization was founded by Behesha Doan, who is also the chief trainer and president. 

Doan says she and other volunteers spend countless hours training the dogs that will provide a new lease on life for each of the service personnel recovering from the trauma of war.

The four veterans arrived in Carbondale from their homes around the country on Monday, April 1, and meet their new service animals for the first time at 11 a.m at the This Able Veteran facility.

The four servicemen will all meet with a veterinarian the morning of April 6 to learn to care for their dogs.

Organizers say the men enjoyed a dinner sponsored by the Carbondale Rotary and took to the skies on flights from the SIU Airport.

Women vets will find unique information, services at Women Veterans Fair

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs is proud to offer the Illinois Women Veterans Fair, on Saturday, April 13.

This event will be held at the Southwestern Illinois College Liberal Arts Complex Conference Center, 2500 Carlyle Ave., Belleville, Ill. The event includes a complimentary light breakfast social, remarks from SWIC President Georgia Costello, Ph.D., IDVA Director Erica Borggren, herself a US Army veteran, and Maj. Gen. Barbara Faulkenberry, Vice-Commander, 18th Air Force, Scott Air Force Base.

Following the remarks, there will be panel discussions geared to help women veterans “own” their military experience, to transition more smoothly into civilian life, and to understand and better deal with Military Sexual Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder related to their military service.

Woman injured in Ava after utility vehicle overturns

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A woman was injured after officers say the utility vehicle she was driving overturned and she was ejected.

On Saturday, April 6 around 7:37 p.m. the Jackson County Sheriff's Department responded to the Johnson Creek area of Ava, Ill. in regards to a single off road utility vehicle crash.

First responders arrived on the scene and found 37-year-old Amy Boland ejected from the 2013 900cc Polaris Ranger. They say the vehicle was traveling through a trail in the woods when it overturned. Boland was ejected and hit her head on a rock.

Officers say Boland was alert and conscious when she was taken to the hospital.
