Union Pacific Great Excursion Adventure stopping in Gorham

GORHAM, IL (KFVS) - The Union Pacific Great Excursion Adventure is on the way with the Little Rock Express being voted as the route to take.

The excursion will begin May 29 with the arrival of Union Pacific's steam locomotive No. 844 in Kansas, Mo. and finish June 9 in Little Rock, Ark.

According to Union Pacific, more than 175,000 votes were cast for four different routes. The Little Rock Express beat out the Tuscola Turn, Baton Rouge Rambler and Boise Express.

The tour will go from Kansas City heading east through Jefferson City and St. Louis before it turns south on the way to Little Rock.

The following schedule is when the locomotive should be in the Heartland area, including stopping in Gorham, Ill.

  • Chester, Ill. - Whistle stop near old depot at Shane and 1st Sts. from10:50 a.m.

Campus, community donates for troop care packages

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale student Dan Wilczak along with his fraternity Beta Theta Pi led a Valentines for Troops Month project.

Students, faculty, staff, campus organizations and community members donated things like snacks, SIUC t-shirts, sportswear, athletic equipment, personal hygiene products and many other things.

In addition to the goodies, the care packages will also contain about 100 or more cards from the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale telling the troops how much their sacrifices mean to them.

The collection brought in a total of 48 large boxes of items for troops overseas.

Wilczak's father is currently serving his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale recently honored their Student Employee of the Year at a breakfast ceremony.

Kelsey E. Jarrett, a senior from Coulterville majoring in microbiology, was recognized as the Student Employee of the Year. She works in the molecular biology and physiology lab under associate professor Jodi Huggenvik.

“She contributes so much to our lab,” Huggenvik said during the awards ceremony. “She not only does what she is assigned to do, but she anticipates what I want done and she does it. I don’t think of her as an employee -- she is one of our research team.”

Jarrett will stay with SIUC as a graduate student.

SIUC employs about 4,000 students with an annual payroll of almost $12 million.

 

SIU School of Medicine names 2011 Outstanding Scholar

SIU School of Medicine names 2011 Outstanding Scholar

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has named this year's University-Level Outstanding Scholar.

Dr. Michael W. Neumeister, professor and division chair of plastic surgery at the SIU School of Medicine is being honored for his contributions to the field. The award is part of SIUC's Excellence Through Commitment program.

As the top scholar, Neumeister will receive a certificate, the title of distinguished scholar and a designated parking space for one year.

Neumeister is director of the Regional Burn Unit and Wound Care Center at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He also serves as the medical director at Baylis-Outpatient Surgery Center and is vice chair of plastic surgery and St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

 

SIH Cancer Institute taking nominations for Cancer Star Survivor

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The SIH Cancer Institute is currently accepting nominations for this year's Cancer Star Survivor.

This year's honoree will throw out the first pitch at the Miner's baseball game on June 3 and will join other survivors, friends and family for a picnic party at Rent One Park in Marion, Ill.

"We need to celebrate cancer survivors and their passion for life, for living each day to the fullest," said Administrative Director of the institute Jennifer Badiu.

Nominations should be 300 words or less and family and friends are encouraged to mail or e-mail their nominations in by May 20.

Fifth Annual Southern Illinois Comedy Festival comes to SIUC

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Southern Illinois Improv Comedy Club will present their 5th Annual Comedy Festival April 20-23.

The festival will be at the Varsity Center for the Arts, Hangar 9, Station 13 and the Longbranch Coffee House.

Headlining will be a fully improvised musical from Chicago called "Baby Wants Candy." They perform weekly shows accompanied by a full band in both Chicago and New York and has been the starting point for many stars including Seth Meyers, Rachael Dratch and Jack McBrayer.

The festival will also feature stand-up comics from Chicago, New York, Wichita, Champaign and Canada.

Jackson Co. seniors could be inducted into 2011 Illinois Senior Hall of Fame

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois Department on Aging announced that applications are now available to nominate older adults for the 2011 Illinois Senior Hall of Fame.

This annual award recognizes Illinois residents ages 65 or older for their contributions. Nomination forms must be postmarked or faxed by August 24, 2011.

"Older adults have so much to offer and we all benefit from their accomplishments," said IDoA Director Charles Johnson. "I ask that you take a moment and thank someone who has made a difference and let us know about them."

The General Assembly established the hall of fame in 1994 to honor adults in four categories: Community Service, Education, Performance and/or Graphic Arts and the Labor Force.

Eligibility is based on past and current accomplishments in a category of choice.
