CSS looking to give kids a joyous Christmas

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Christian Social Services is asking for help in getting foster children a joyous Christmas this year.

According to Regional Director Michelle Bradley, Christian Social Services in Carbondale covers 13 counties in southern Illinois. 

Bradley says the Christmas Season fast approaching, they are asking for  assistance in helping ensure foster children in will experience the joyous surprise of receiving meaningful gifts for Christmas, something new for so many of the children we serve.  They have come from troubled homes, where disappointment is far more common in their lives.

Bradley says each year children in our foster care program learn the true meaning of Christmas through the generosity of individuals in the southern 13 counties.

SIUC names new vice chancellor

SIUC names new vice chancellor

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor Rita Cheng announced Monday James G. Salmo has been named as vice chancellor for development and alumni relations.

In his new role, Salmo also will serve as CEO of the SIU Foundation.

Salmo is vice president for college advancement at Rhode Island College in Providence, R.I., which has an enrollment of 9,000 students. Salmo also serves as executive director of the Rhode Island College Foundation.

His appointment, effective Nov. 28, requires SIU Board of Trustees approval, followed by formal endorsement by the SIU Foundation Board.

“Jim will bring significant experience in fundraising, management and leadership to the position, along with a demonstrated ability to hire and develop staff,” Cheng said. “I am excited that he will be joining us.

Grocery Super Sale in Carbondale Oct. 6

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Neighborhood Co-op will be donating 1 percent of all sales during their annual Grocery Super Sale on Saturday, October 6.

The sale will be under the big tent in the Murdale Shopping Center parking lot. Good Samaritan Ministeries will also be on hand to collect donations of canned goods, pasta, cereal, snacks and other non-perishable items.

Peanut butter recalled after salmonella outbreak

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning Illinois residents to not eat Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter or peanut butter and other products that has nuts and seeds from Sunland, Inc.

Both companies have issued voluntary recalls after preliminary results from a multi-state outbreak investigation of salmonella show these products may be the source of the outbreak.

IDPH is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the investigation of the outbreak which has affected 30 people in 19 states, including one case in central Illinois.

Those who are reporting to be sick range in age from 1 to 77 years and first became ill from June 11 to September 11 of this year. About 63 percent of people who have become sick are under the age of 10. Four people have been hospitalized.

There have been no deaths reported so far.

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Jackson County Health Department has released its Seasonal Flu Clinic Schedule.

Walk-in clinic times for flu vaccines at the health department are Monday through Friday, until 5:30 p.m. Flu vaccines are $35 and adult pneumonia vaccines are also available for $90.
