Equestrian club to hold horse show at Du Quoin State Fairgrounds Sept. 15-16

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - An equestrian club based in Murphysboro will be holding a horse show on September 15 and 16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds Horse Pavilion.

For the past year, Little Egypt Dressage Association has been busy raising money for "Equine Services for Heroes," a program that helps military veterans through services provided by a Premier Accredited Center of PATH International, Central Kentucky Riding for Hope, in Lexington, Ky.

Organizers say there is no fee for spectators to watch the show.

PATH International provides leadership and guidance for equine assisted activities and therapies. To accomplish this mission, PATH Intl. centers are connected with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and Clinics as well as individual veterans. Veterans of any age can benefit from the program by getting involved with horses.

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity's Office of Energy Assistance announced Friday that seniors and people with disabilities can begin applying for winter heating assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program beginning Tuesday, September 4.

Adult self-defense class to be held in Carbondale

Adult self-defense class to be held in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Martial arts instructor and 5th degree black belt, Michael Jessup, will be teaching an adult self-defense workshop on September 10 in Carbondale.

The workshop is designed to teach simple street techniques to adults to prevent them from becoming a target of crime or violence.

The workshop, which will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m., will be held at 1100 West Main Street in Carbondale. It is free to attend, but seating is limited. To reserve a spot, call 529-0245.

'Gospel at the Liberty' concert to benefit historic Murphysboro theater

'Gospel at the Liberty' concert to benefit historic Murphysboro theater

MURPHYSBORO (KFVS) - There will be a gospel music night at the Historic Liberty Theater in Murphysboro, Friday, August 31 at 7 p.m.

The event is called Gospel at the Liberty and it will serve as a benefit for the on-going restoration project of the Historic Liberty Theater which in June of this year was added to the National Register of Historic Sites.

A $5 donation is suggested.

Some of the groups scheduled to appear include The Liberty Street Baptist Church Choir, St. Andrew Blue Grass Mass Band, Liberty Street Baptist Church Men's Choir and the Morningstar Baptist Church Choir.

Lighted parking and concessions will be available. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

2 aviation alumni from SIUC selected for elite Blue Angels

2 aviation alumni from SIUC selected for elite Blue Angels

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Two Southern Illinois University Carbondale aviation alumni will be part of the Blue Angels flight demonstration team for the next two show seasons.

According to SIUC, Navy Lt. Ryan Chamberlain from Bloomington, Ill. and Navy Lt. Cmdr. Declan Hartney from Limerick Ireland are part of the elite team that represents the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. Chamberlain will pilot an F/A-18 beginning as part of the 2013 flying team. Hartney is pre-selected as the maintenance officer for the team for the 2014 season.

Chamberlain said flying with the Blue Angels seemed like an unattainable dream. However, stepping out of expected paths is something he's become accustomed to over the years.

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - A regional historian will discuss and sign copies of his book, "The State of Southern Illinois: An Illustrated History," at 7 p.m. Monday, August 20 at the John A. Logan Museum, 1613 Edith Street,  Murphysboro.

 

Herbert K. Russell's new hardcover book offers interpretations of a number of important aspects of Southern Illinois history. Focusing on the area known as “Egypt,” the region south of U.S. Route 50, he begins with the earliest geologic formations and follows Southern Illinois’ history into the 21st century.

'American Pickers' coming to southern Illinois

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Williamson County Tourism Bureau has announced "American Pickers" is coming to Southern Illinois in mid-September.

The Williamson County Tourism Bureau has been asked to help "American Pickers" in finding hidden treasures within the area. They are currently looking for large collections of movie and music memorabilia, sports memorabilia, and items from Illinois history and much more.

The show airs on the HISTORY channel and is produced by Cineflix Productions. The adventures of Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz bring them to small towns across the country in search of weird and wonderful Americana. Mike and Frank bring the past to life and recycle America as they go.
