Lawmakers to host annual senior fair

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - All senior citizens in the Carbondale area are invited to the annual Senior Fair at the Carbondale Civic Center on August 1 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The fair, hosted by State Senator Dave Luechtefeld, State Representative Mike Bost and Carbondale Mayor Joel Fritzel, will offer information and demonstrations for important quality-of-life issues that impact senior citizens.

Attendees will have the opportunity to take blood pressure tests, pulse oxymetry tests, bone density and body mass index screenings along with wellness screenings that include a trigger point message. There will also be an opportunity for blood sugar screenings however a morning fast is recommended for that test. All tests will be provided by local health care organizations.

4 So. Ill. students attend 'Youth to Washington' tour

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Four Southern Illinois students represented Egyptian Electric Cooperative in Washington, D.C. during the annual "Youth to Washington" tour June 15-22.

Matt Huff of Coulterville, Nina McLernon of Carbondale, Matthew Rehmer of Lenzburg, and Collin Smith of Pinckneyville were representing the company. The event was sponsored by the electric and telephone cooperatives of Illinois since the late 1950s, is an introduction to our democratic form of government and cooperatives for rural youth.

The students met with Congressman Jerry Costello and were among 75 rural Illinois youth leaders selected for the trip. The Illinois students joined more than 1,500 young leaders from across the country.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A Carbondale art competition winner met with Congressman Jerry Costello this week.

The 12th Congressional District Art Competition winner Nicole Ely was in Washington with other compettion winners to attend events opening the 2012 National Art Exhibit.

90-year-old WWII vet describes flying B-29 bomber

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A 90-year-old veteran from Jefferson County, Illinois came out to see the B-29 bomber he flew in World War II.

Evertt Atkinson welcomed back one of the Commemorative Air Force's most rare and valuable airplanes, the FIFI B‐29 Superfortress. Atkinson flew FiFi and several other planes during WWII.

FIFI is one of only a few remaining B‐29s in the world, and the only one still flying.

David Oliver, 30, is the current aircraft commander of FiFi. By the time David went off to college he was a flight instructor teaching fellow students how to fly. His senior year he was selected as captain of the Southern Illinois University aerobatic team.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - River Radio employee Tom Miller was recognized Tuesday at the Southern Illinois Airport in Carbondale for his efforts of support for the Nation Guard and Reserve.

Miller was nominated and granted the highest award given to a civilian, "The Seven Seals Award."

The award, depicting the heraldry seals of the seven military services, is given at the discretion of the ESGR chairman to recognize the efforts by a citizen, business, or organization, whose supportive actions have benefited the National Guard and Reserve through means other than employment. Recipients of this award have demonstrated outstanding support, commitment, and extreme patriotism to the United States military.

Benton woman wins $2,000 shopping spree for energy challenge

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Ameren Illinois announced Monday that a Benton, Ill. woman is the grand prize winner of the Take a Pledge challenge.

Debbie Kolk of Benton chose to spend her $2,000 winnings Monday morning during a shopping spree at a local Best Buy in Carbondale. Ameren said winnings must be spent on Energy Star qualified appliances. The goal is to continue helping Kolk with her personal commitment to save energy.

The first place winner, Lisa Blakely of O'Fallon, Ill. and second prize winner, Carolyn Mathewson of Effingham, are receiving $300 and $100 home improvement store gift certificates, respectively.
