 This Able Veteran Heroic Veterans service dogs to graduate

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -  This Able Veteran Heroic Veterans service dogs are set to graduate on Friday, April 12.

This will be the second graduation the group.  The organization was founded by Behesha Doan, who is also the chief trainer and president. 

Doan says she and other volunteers spend countless hours training the dogs that will provide a new lease on life for each of the service personnel recovering from the trauma of war.

The four veterans arrived in Carbondale from their homes around the country on Monday, April 1, and meet their new service animals for the first time at 11 a.m at the This Able Veteran facility.

The four servicemen will all meet with a veterinarian the morning of April 6 to learn to care for their dogs.

Organizers say the men enjoyed a dinner sponsored by the Carbondale Rotary and took to the skies on flights from the SIU Airport.

Illinois ranks fifth in the nation for lowest percentage of pet-owning homes

(KFVS) - The American Veterinary Medical Association recently released its U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, which revealed that Illinois ranks fifth for pet-owning households with 51.8 percent.

The survey is conducted by the AVMA every five years and always includes a breakdown of pet ownership by state. The most recent survey, conducted in 2012 but based on Dec. 31, 2011 numbers, reveals that the top 10 pet-owning states are:

  • Vermont - 70.8 percent
  • New Mexico - 67.6 percent
  • South Dakota - 65.6 percent
  • Oregon - 63.6 percent
  • Maine - 62.9 percent
  • Washington - 62.7 percent
  • Arkansas - 62.4 percent
  • West Virginia - 62.1 percent
  • Idaho - 62 percent
  • Wyoming - 61.8 percent

3rd case of equine West Nile found in Jackson County

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - A third horse in Jackson County has tested positive for West Nile virus.

The Jackson County Health Department says having three horses positive in the same county in the same year is very rare in Illinois.

According to public health officials, the presence of the virus in horses can be an indicator of increased risk to humans of West Nile virus.

Since mid-June Jackson County Health Department has detected West Nile virus in ten batches of mosquitoes, one bird, and now has lab results for three horses positive for the virus.

No human cases of WNV have been reported in Jackson County this year, although 138 human cases have been reported in Illinois, with five deaths. In total, six horses have tested positive for WNV in Illinois.

Blessing of the Animals, food drive Oct. 6 in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Church of the Good Shepherd is hosting a Blessing of the Animals, as well as a Food Drive for Good Samaritan Ministries Food Pantry, on Saturday, October 6 at 2 p.m.

The church is located at 515 S. Orchard Drive in Carbondale.

Animals of all kinds (leashed or otherwise contained) and their owners are welcome. There will be a short ritual of thanksgiving for all animals that bless our lives followed by individual blessings of animals by Rev. Sonja L. Ingebritsen.

Treats for pets and people will be provided. If you can’t bring your pet, you are welcome to bring a photograph. Children may bring stuffed animals to be blessed.

Mindful that many who give pets a home are without adequate food for their own tables, you are invited to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry.

Dog days of summer fundraiser to help animal shelters

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Neighborhood Co-op Grocery, in an effort to help four-legged, will hold a fundraiser with three local animal shelters called the Dog Days of Summer.

Dog owners can bring their pets for a dog wash, with will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 21 at Turley Park, across from the Murdale Shopping Center in Carbondale. Volunteers will wash the dogs for donations. $5 is recommended for small dogs, $10 for large.

Dog Days of Summer will benefit the Humane Society of Southern Illinois (HSSI), PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) and St. Francis CARE (Community Animal Rescue and Education).

Along with the dog wash, shelter volunteers will also be in the parking lots with information about their organizaitons, such as ways to adopt a pet.

Their will be live music from the duo RoginboB from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

An appearance by another canine is also anticipated- Grey Dawg, the Saluki mascot.

Fundraiser at winery to raise money for Murphysboro dog park

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Friends of Murphysboro Foundation will host a fundraising event for the public dog park on Thursday, June 14 at 6:30 p.m.

The fundraiser will be at Blue Sky Vineyard. They will be raising money for continued maintenance of the dog park. Located in historic Riverside Park, almost a year ago, the dog park has seen over 1,200 canine visitors.

“I am very pleased with the use of the dog park, the only one in the Southern Illinois Region, and feel it’s a great addition to our community," said Park District Board member Michael Jones.

Guests attending the event will enjoy wine and food pairing by local businesses Something Sweet Café, Cristaudo’s and Florals by MJ’s Place. Six lucky guests will receive a bottle of Riverside Rose’, a wine blended and bottled by Blue Sky Vineyard exclusively for Friends of Murphysboro Foundation.
