Jazz appreciation month at the historic Liberty Theater

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - April is “ Jazz Appreciation Month”   and Murphysboro High School and Middle School Jazz Bands will team up with guest artist Ron Coulter for a concert on Friday, April 19.

Show organizer, Middle School Band Director Nick Williams said tickets to the show are just $6 per person for the 7:00 pm event at The Historic Liberty Theater.

Organizers say thirty-nine members, who have a   history of excelling at both state and national competition, bringing home numerous Superior ratings.

Coulter’s impressive background includes lectureships in percussion, improvisation, and  jazz studies at Southern Illinois University and John A. Logan College, international tours, hundreds of appearances with  music greats like Glenn Miller and Harry James Bands, and with such artists at Al Martino and Marvin Hamlisch.

John Mayer to entertain at Illinois State Fair

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - Fair officials have announced that blues-rock musician John Mayer is schedule to perform at the 2013 Illinois State Fair in August.

American Idol champion Phillip Phillips will headline for Mayer at the Sunday, Aug. 11 concert.

Mayer, a Grammy award winner, is well known for hits like "Daughters," "Waiting on the World to Change," and "Say."

Tickets are priced form $40 for a Tier 3 seat to $65 for a VIPit pass. They go on sale Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m. Tickets can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000 or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet.

The Fair begins Thursday, Aug. 8-Sunday, Aug. 18.

U of I Extension sponsors 4-H Summer Camp

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -  According to University of Illinois Extension, the 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello, Illinois is the perfect place for your child to experience the finest in summer camp life. 

They have traditional and innovative programs, professional staff and comfortable facilities await campers at 4-H Memorial.

Summer youth camp is open to all youth ages 8-16 years.  Following with the 4-H mission to foster positive youth development through a “learn-by-doing” philosophy, campers experience a five-day, four-night camp full of activities and learning.  Swimming, boating, hiking, arts & crafts, fishing, singing, volleyball, softball, the list goes on and on!

Four summer youth camps will be operated June and July.

Jackson County Medical Reserve Corps orientation meeting March 21

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Jackson County Medical Reserve Corps will hold a quarterly orientation meeting on March 21 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Any resident of Jackson County or surrounding counties that would like to learn more information about volunteering to prepare for and respond to public health emergencies is encouraged to attend.

The meeting will be held at the Jackson County Health Department, 415 Health Department Road, Murphysboro, in the rear building.

The orientation meeting will inform attendees about the Jackson County MRC, its mission, and training requirements and opportunities.

The Jackson County MRC was established in 2010 and currently has 32 volunteer members.

Volunteers receive free training, emergency preparedness materials and a uniform shirt. Jackson County Health Department is the sponsoring agency.

The orientation is for informational purposes only and attendees are not required to join.

Road closure in Carbondale on Lewis Lane

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -  Due to water main construction, a stretch of Lewis Lane will be closed to through traffic on Wednesday, March 13.

The stretch of road to be closed runs between Grand Avenue and Park Street.

The closure will begin at 7 a.m. and last to 6 p.m.

The City of Carbondale greatly appreciates motorists cooperation and patience and urges motorist to use caution in all work zones.

In order to prevent delays please seek alternate routes during this time period.

Scholarship applications available for youth leadership training

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Scholarship applicatons are available for youth leadership training at the Cebrin Goodman Institute on Substance Abuse (formerly Illinois Teen Institute).

This year's conference will be held at Eastern Illinois University on July 21-25.

CGTI is leadership training for middle and high school students who meet with others around the state focusing on personal responsibility, decision making and leading to change.

60 scholarships are available. You can submit applications to the Jackson County sheriff's office or the Illinois Sheriffs' Association.

Transportation is not included in the scholarship. As a participant, tuition, lodging, t-shirt, photo, workshop materials, recreation and meals are provided.

Carbondale Public Library to host Teen Poetry Blowout

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -  The Carbondale Public Library is holding an event for local teens who like to read, write and share poetry.

It's called  the Teen Poetry Blowout and it will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 3 p.m.  

This program will be taught by Philip Martin, a graduate student from SIU’s English Department.

Teens will be introduced to new poems and poets; encouraged to share their own poetry; and gain solid writing skills in fun and interesting ways.

Participants must be at least 12 years of age to attend.

There is no sign up or registration. Refreshments will be served.
