Rend Lake College Class of '13 crosses stage at 46th Commencement

INA, IL (KFVS) - Rend Lake College officials send their thanks and congratulations to the Class of 2013.

The 46th Annual RLC Commencement was held May 18 in James Waugh Gymnasium. Dr. Jeannie Mitchell, a psychology professor at RLC, was the guest speaker.

A total of 860 graduates were conferred 773 Associate Degrees and 651 Occupational Certificates.

Open House scheduled for Carbondale New School

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Carbondale New School Open House will be Thursday, May 16 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Open House will showcase student work including: Art, Science, History and Spanish. It is open to the public.

They are now enrolling students for 2013-2014 school year, for pre-k through eighth grade.

SIUC spring commencement ceremonies set for May 11

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale announced their commencement ceremonies are set for Saturday, May 11.

In addition, the inaugural “Forever SIU: A Commencement Celebration” on May 10 will celebrate the members of the Class of 2013 and their families. Festivities are set for 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the SIU Arena parking lot and will include the Chicago-based cover band Mike and Joe, refreshments and items for purchase from local vendors.

According to SIUC, there are 3,606 candidates for degrees as of April 30, including: 2,763 candidates for bachelor’s degrees, 596 candidates for master’s degrees, 62 candidates for doctoral degrees, 116 law degree candidates and 69 candidates for associate degrees.

Three separate commencement ceremonies will be at the SIU Arena for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Commencement ceremonies are open to the public, and there is no ticket requirement.

AMP offers scholarships for communications students

(KFVS) - Tri-State Advertising & Marketing Professionals is now accepting applications for the 2013 scholarship program, which will award up to three $500 scholarships for the fall 2013 academic year.

Students from the following schools are eligible to apply for the scholarships: Southeast Missouri State University, Mineral Area College, Three Rivers College, Murray State University and Southern Illinois University – Carbondale.

Applicants must be pursuing a degree in marketing, advertising, public relations, mass communications, graphic design, radio/television production or a related field and have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Special consideration will be given to students displaying leadership in the college or university’s official club in one of the previous areas. The completed application, along with supplementary materials, must be received by May 31 to be considered.

IEMA launches initiative to enhance safety on Illinois campuses

(KFVS) - The Illinois Emergency Management Agency recently announced an initiative to enhance safety for students, staff and visitors on college and university campuses.

Nine colleges and universities will participate in a pilot of the Ready to Respond Campus program, with a full rollout of the program expected in January 2014.

“The Ready to Respond Campus program will recognize those institutions that meet rigorous standards for ensuring the safety of their students, staff and visitors,” said IEMA Director Jonathon Monken. “The Ready to Respond Campus designation will let current and prospective students and their parents know that safety is a top priority on the campus.”
