SIU Homecoming Parade detour routes and street closures | Schools

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -  The City of Carbondale  is announcing the parade will require a reroute of  traffic on Illinois Route 51 (South Illinois Avenue and South University Avenue) south of West Walnut Street to Pleasant Hill.beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The 2012 Southern Illinois University Carbondale Homecoming Parade is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 13.

Here are the details according to the Carbondale Police Department:

STREET CLOSURES:

All lanes of traffic on South Illinois Avenue from Pleasant Hill Road north to Walnut Street and all lanes of South University Avenue from Walnut Street south to Mill Street will be closed for the parade. The Mill Street underpass will also be closed. East Mill Street will be blocked off between South Illinois Avenue to South Lincoln Street.

PARADE ASSEMBLY:

The parade will assemble and stage on East Mill Street between South Lincoln Street and South Illinois Avenue. This street will be closed to vehicular traffic.

NORTHBOUND DETOUR:

The detour for northbound traffic will begin at Pleasant Hill Road, where it will turn east and proceed to South Wall Street. Traffic will turn north onto South Wall Street and continue to East Main Street, where it will turn west. Traffic will proceed to Illinois Avenue (Route 51) and turn north.

SOUTHBOUND DETOUR:

The detour for southbound traffic will begin at West Walnut Street, where it will turn east and proceed to South Wall Street. Traffic will turn south onto South Wall Street and continue to Pleasant Hill Road, where it will turn west. Traffic will proceed to South Illinois Avenue (Route 51) and turn south.

PARADE ROUTE:

The parade begins on South Illinois Avenue at East Mill Street. The parade will proceed north on South Illinois Avenue to West College Street, where it will turn west and travel to South University Avenue. At South University Avenue the parade will turn south and will pass the reviewing stand located near Quigley Hall on the campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The parade will continue south on South Illinois Avenue to Lincoln Drive, where it will disband. All streets located within the area of temporary street closure will remain closed until the entire parade has cleared South Illinois Avenue.
