CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -  Due to water main construction, a stretch of Lewis Lane will be closed to through traffic on Wednesday, March 13.

The stretch of road to be closed runs between Grand Avenue and Park Street.

The closure will begin at 7 a.m. and last to 6 p.m.

The City of Carbondale greatly appreciates motorists cooperation and patience and urges motorist to use caution in all work zones.

In order to prevent delays please seek alternate routes during this time period.

Carbondale police urge drivers to safely celebrate St. Patrick's Day

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The City of Carbondale Police Department announced they will be conducting special patrols this St. Patrick’s Day holiday to crack down on drunk drivers.

Unbuckled motorists also will be ticketed.

“We are reminding everyone this weekend to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket,” said Chief Jody O’Guinn. “If you plan on drinking alcohol, designate a sober driver before the party begins. Be responsible or risk a DUI.”

“Too often, St. Patrick’s Day can be a deadly and dangerous time on our roadways because of drunk driving,” said O’Guinn. “That is why starting March 14 and running through March 17, we will be working overtime to catch and arrest anyone who is driving drunk.”

In addition to looking for drunk drivers, Carbondale Police officers will be stepping up seat belt enforcement particularly at night when seat belt usage rates are lowest.

IDOT Announces 2013 Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Conference

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - Illinois Department of Transportation officials announced Tuesday the start of the 24th annual Today’s Challenge, Tomorrow’s Reward (TCTR) conference.

It will be held at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel & Conference Center in Springfield.

The two-day event is intended to provide educational and skill building workshops, networking opportunities and information on how to get Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs) more work on highway construction contracts.

“This event is an excellent opportunity for DBEs to share ideas and build relationships that last far beyond the conference,” said Secretary Schneider. “We want to encourage attendees to take full advantage of the many workshops available and the networking event to help ensure future success.”

Traffic Safety Event in Murphysboro Feb. 16

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - A traffic safety event on Saturday, February 16 will be conducted at different intersections in the Murphysboro by the Murphysboro High School Future Business Leaders of America in cooperation with the Murphysboro Police Department.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Police say the intersections are normally used by organizations to collect money for projects.

On Saturday, members of the FBLA and police will not be collecting donations, but they will be handing out Awareness Information about Traffic Safety, mainly focused on passenger restraints, cell phone usage and texting while driving.

They ask that drivers take the information and listen to the message they are providing.

Park Street in Carbondale, Ill. to be reduced to one lane

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Park Street in Carbondale, Ill. will be reduced to one lane on Wednesdsay, Feb. 6 and Thursday, Feb. 7.

The closure is due to water main construction, which will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

The road will be closed from Lewis Lane to the east for 500 feet. 

Drivers are asked to use extreme caution in the work zone and to use a different route to avoid the construction area.

IDOT, law enforcement reminds drivers to be responsible on Super Bowl Sunday

(KFVS) - Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider, along with the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies are reminding drivers to be sure and designate a sober driver, especially with the upcoming Super Bowl weekend when friends and families will gather to watch the big game Sunday, February 3.

"We hope everyone enjoys the festivities of Super Bowl Weekend, but we want to remind everyone - before you decide to drink- to choose a sober designated driver," Schneider said. "We want you to hand off your keys to ensure you, your passengers and everyone on our roadways can return home safely. Drunk driving is always preventable, and driving drunk or buzzed could result in seriously injuring or killing yourself or someone else. Motorists can expect the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies to have a visible presence and to stop anyone who makes the dangerous decision to drink and drive."
