IDOT launches 2013 Yellow Dot Program

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Transportation, along with the Sangamon County Health Department, first-responders and local participants kicked off the 2013 Yellow Dot program on Thursday.

Due to the successful introduction of the program in 2011, the speakers highlighted the results of last year’s program and encouraged all residents of Illinois to take part in this simple, life-saving initiative.

“We want everyone to understand and receive the benefits of the Yellow Dot program,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider. “Many children have allergies or disorders and by having detailed medical information readily available to first responders, it could potentially save a child’s life.”

IDOT also provided advance notice of lane closures that will be in place for the holiday weekend to help drivers' travel plans and boost safety.

"Driving zero roadway fatalities to reality is IDOT's goal. During the Labor Day holiday, we will again suspend all non-emergency road work on state roadways, where possible, to improve traffic flow and to kick-start the heavily traveled weekend," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. All-time high seat belt usage recorded in Illinois

All-time high seat belt usage recorded in Illinois

CHICAGO, IL (KFVS) - Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn announced Friday that Illinois has achieved an all-time high seat belt usage rate in 2012.

Federal observational surveys showed that 93.6 percent of front-seat passengers were using seat belts as of June. That's up from last year's percentage of 92.9 and is also above the national average of 84 percent.

The governor said this significant achievement is credited to awareness campaigns, driver compliance, strategic partnerships with state and local law enforcement and a stronger safety legislation.

"Labor Day weekend should be a time of parades, barbecues and baseball, not sitting in a hospital ER, wondering if a loved one will survive a crash," Gov. Quinn said.

(KFVS) - Illinois State Police statewide are reminding drivers to make safety their number one priority while driving during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The Labor Day weekend is one the busiest driving periods and thousands of drivers are expected to hit the roadways and interstates nationwide.

ISP says Law Enforcement officials will push for ZERO fatalities by enforcing the four most common traffic violations: Speeding; DUI; seat belts; and distracted driving.

"Drunk driving remains a serious, unacceptable threat to our families and our communities," said District 13 Commander Thomas Stehley. "Our campaign is clear – if you choose to drive drunk, you will be held accountable."

ISP officials will also be working closely with the Statewide Terrorism Intelligence Center monitoring intelligence and special alerts looking for suspicious vehicles and criminal activity crossing state lines.
