New hiking and equestrian trail maps available

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Friends of the Shawnee National Forest have released an updated equestrian and hiking trail map.

The map covers the Eddyville and Herod, Illinois areas.

The maps cost $5 each at the Shawnee National Forest Headquarters in Harrisburg and the Hidden Springs Ranger District Station in Vienna.

These maps are also sold locally at the following locations; Bear Branch campground and Hayes Canyon campground, Eddyville, Ill.; Double M campground, Junction, Ill.; High Knob Ranch, Equality, Ill.; and Little Lusk Trail Lodge, Stonefort, Ill.

According to Friends of the SNF, the maps are printed on high quality, waterproof, and tear resistant paper and 25-percent of proceeds will go toward trail improvements on the Shawnee.

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now accepting entries for the 2013 Illinois Junior Duck Stamp Contest, which is administered by the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.

Entries must be postmarked by March 15, 2013.

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program is unique in its blending of science and art. It engages children in the study of waterfowl and habitat conservation as well as migration. The program guides students, using scientific and wildlife observation principles, to communicate visually what they have learned through an entry in their state’s Junior Duck Stamp art contest.

This conservation education program is open to any child in kindergarten through high school. Southern Illinois teachers can contact the Refuge about outreach programs and resources, offered free of charge, in support of the Junior Duck Stamp program.

One-day sale of native trees and plants in Carbondale to be fundraiser

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Two organizations will be hosting sales of native trees and other native plants in conjunction with the Illinois Indigenous Plants Symposium at John A. Logan College on Saturday, March 16.

The group Keep Carbondale Beautiful will be selling trees, including two kinds of dogwoods. You can click here to see them on their website.

Green Earth will be selling grasses and shrubs, including perennials, whose flowers attract pollinators. You can click here to see them on their website.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in and outside of Building H at the college, gardeners can browse and take their pick of a selection of native species, many of which are not normally available at big-box garden stores. They have been selected from Forrest Keeling Nursery for appropriateness to the area.

Shawnee Forest Volunteer Corps announces spring work days

(KFVS) - The Shawnee National Forest Volunteer Corps is inviting volunteers to join them to help assist with upcoming trail work days.

Whether a first time beginner or seasoned trail crew veteran, the Corps says no certain level of experience is needed as training; including how to perform activities safely.

Volunteers will be joining Shawnee National Forest employees in stewardship efforts at several locations on the Hidden Springs and Mississippi Bluff Ranger Districts. With  the arrival of spring to the Southern Illinois region, the Corps says each work day will encompass a fun, hands-on, teamwork centered approach with a backdrop of budding trees, blooming wildflowers and much more.

Illinois firearm deer season preliminary harvest totals 99,324

Illinois firearm deer season preliminary harvest totals 99,324

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recently announced the firearm deer hunters in Illinois took a preliminary total of 99,324 deer during the seven-day firearm deer season Nov. 16-18 and Nov. 29-Dec. 2.

IDNR says the preliminary second-season harvest total was 27,213, compared with the 31,259 deer taken by hunters during the second segment of the 2011 season. This year's preliminary first-season deer harvest was 72,111, compared with a first-season harvest of 66,501 in 2011. They say the preliminary harvest totals include deer taken in all counties in which firearm deer hunting is permitted, as well as at Chain O'Lakes State Park in Lake County.
